The Three Proposed Northern Routes
The leaked draft maps, shared privately with local community and First Nations leaders during spring consultations, outline three primary northern pathways:
- The Northern Path: Originates in the Fort McMurray oil sands, travels west through Fort St. John, and terminates near Observatory Inlet, a remote coastal area near the Alaska border.
- The Central Path: Starts northeast of Edmonton near Fort Saskatchewan, crosses the Rocky Mountains, and angles slightly north to terminate at Nasoga Gulf.
- The Trans-Mountain Path: Also starts near Fort Saskatchewan, travels west through the Rockies, and splits near the coast to connect with Kitimat and Prince Rupert. This route closely mirrors Enbridge's canceled Northern Gateway project.
