    * Je m’tire à la Fnac. J’ai envie d’un nouveau livre, un roman peut-être. Qu’esse [Qu’est-ce que] tu lis en ce moment ?
    * Je viens de lire « Où es-tu ? » de Lévy. Un peu léger en fait. C’est pas un roman- fleuve. Cela pourrait presque être une nouvelle. Mais j’aime bien, quand même. Et si tu prenais le bouquin « Cécilia » sur l’ex-première dame de France ?
    * Mais il n’est pas interdit ?
    * Non, je ne crois pas qu’il soit interdit. [De] Toutes façons, ça fait un peu trop presse-people. Les éditeurs suivent le mouvement pour répondre à l’attente des lecteurs. Et t’as lu [N’as-tu pas lu] le bouquin « Une vie » édité chez Stock ?
    * Les mémoires de Simone Veil ?
    * Ouais, il est en tête de gondole. Il fait un carton.
    * Les mémoires, c’est pas trop mon truc.
    * Ah oui, t’aimes (tu aimes) bien les intrigues riches, les personnages pas [qui ne sont pas] trop parfaits, les ouvrages modernes quoi.
    * Oui. Je vais prendre un Beigbeder.
    * Ah ben ouais, il met pas mal la zone dans le milieu littéraire. Tu vas être comblé.

  • Vie des paludiers – Today’s French
The life of salt pond workers
Part of French Videos | Understanding French Videos
Listen to the authentic French in this video and to the slow French version here. Watch, read, translate and/or repeat a passage of your choice to improve your French tremendously. Anne designed this lesson as a week-long assignment: listen to the passage every day and work with the text provided.
The life of the Guérande salt pond workers
Salt finds its way in all our dishes, but how does it get there? How is it harvested?
We use salt as a flavor enhancer. Salt comes in different sizes and flavors: coarse salt, fine salt, fleur de sel and flavored salt.
French salt comes from 2 main regions: Guérande and Camargue.
Let’s listen to this passage that goes over the difficult salt harvest and let’s have fun as we’re learning French.

Listen to the recording at the bottom of the page if you are not able to view the video on your device, or click here to view on youtube

    In English
The life of the Guérande salt pond workers
From 3 minutes 21 to 4 minutes and 5 seconds
And when you look at these barefoot salt pond workers, you mostly see a dance ballet.
These ancestral gestures is what make it possible to harvest coarse salt. Here, no machine, no fertilizer. Everything is in keeping with nature.
I have a sense of freedom when I work uh, in the salterns. Yet uh, having the weather as a boss, uh, it’s not easy, huh. But, yeah, it’s what freedom is, in my head.

  • Quel verbe ? – Today’s French
What’s the correct French verb? – Le français d’aujourd’hui
French would be too easy if we could translate words literally. For example, if we could say “prendre une classe” for “to take a class” or “marcher le chien ” for “to walk the dog”. Here is a list of French verbal expressions most commonly mistranslated into French.

    * to take a class …. suivre un cours
    * to walk the dog  …. promener le chien
    * to bring someone somewhere …. amener quelqu’un quelque part
    * to take a nap …. faire la sieste

In France, we don’t mess with butter! Butter is a ‘protected national commodity’ in France. I’m joking a bit, of course, but when it’s missing, when there is a shortage of butter, all the players in the society – from farmers to economists, to consumers – get involved.
