French has borrowed words from other cultures throughout the centuries. Here is a list of 10 common French words taken from Arabic. Listen to them, repeat them and send me your sentences with them.

La maison de France et Henri

France et Henri Durand habitent à Louret. Louret est une petite ville de 8 000 habitants. Ils ont une maison en banlieue. Leur maison a deux étages. Au rez-de-chaussée, il y a une cuisine, une pièce de vie, un salon et un cabinet de toilettes pour les invités. Il n’y a pas de salle à manger. Au premier étage, il y a trois chambres, une terrasse, deux salles de bains, un bureau et un débarras. France et Henri n’ont pas de bibliothèque au premier. Au sous-sol, il y a un garage pour deux voitures et une cave. France et Henri y habitent depuis 10 ans.

France and Henri Durand live in Louret. Louret is a small town of 8,000 people. They have a house in the suburbs. Their house has two floors. On the ground floor, there is a kitchen, a living room, a lounge and a half-bath for guests. There isn’t any dining room. On the first floor, there are three bedrooms, a porch, two bathrooms, an office and a storage room. France and Henri don’t have a library on the first floor. In the basement, there is a 2-car garage and a basement. France and Henri have lived there for 10 years.

French Articles

Part of Definite and Indefinite Articles | Masculine and Feminine in French

Saying THE and A or AN. THE has 4 translations in French: LE, LA, L’, LES. A/AN has 3 translations in French: UN, UNE, DES.

French words have a gender.  For instance, a cheese is masculine and a baguette is feminine. The gender shows up in the article, but also in the adjective, so it’s important to know them:

* the fresh baguette and the fresh cheese –> la baguette fraîche et le fromage frais

Sometimes, the gender is obvious (a man, a woman); sometimes, there is no logic to it. Therefore, it is necessary to memorize the gender with every new noun you are learning.

Memorizing past participles is a long journey.

* Good news: past participles don’t change with the conjugation.

* Other good news: past participles are used in many French tenses, not just the passé composé.

* Slight damper: past participles past participles are all over the place, there is no logic to how they are organized, and they have to be memorized.
