Today, I give you the research on diet and lifestyle therapy that is proving to help people live longer- better. I really should have a drum roll here but the research is showing that 71-90% of people with cognitive decline, some with diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease get better.
We coexist with bacteria throughout the environment and always have. Since the beginning of time. In fact, our very mitochondria that energize our body are bacteria in origin. Now that is something to ponder. I’ll let you figure that one out and we can talk about the implications some time but today I am going to talk about 5 ways to improve digestive health with pre and probiotics and then tell you about my favorites ones. Because, Whatever your health goal- you can’t have it if your digestive health isn’t top notch.
Let’s just start with our kids and compare their health to those around the world.
Japan has a 3% obesity rate and when it went up just a percent, they rallied to successfully reverse the trend. In the US –50% of our kids are overweight or obese and 33% have prediabetes. a metabolic disease- meaning they have high blood sugar, blood pressure, or cholesterol. And 77% of young adults aren’t eligible for the military because they are overweight. Life expectancy in Europe is 6-7 years longer
Researchers around the world are looking at the role of a mechanism, inflammation, in what makes a good brain go bad, and specifically in diseases like Alzheimer’s or memory deficits. Plastics, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, dyes, preservatives and more cross the blood brain barrier and cause havoc.
There are so many studies, so much research, so many brilliant minds that are digging into optimizing how our brain functions, especially as we get older. You may be shocked that there are many studies that have taken place and are ongoing that show that people that have been diagnosed with cognitive decline. MoCa scores between 15 and 24 or even less, to improve with diet and lifestyle intervention. Amazing. Researchers like Bredesen, Toups, Ornish, Sandison, Fitzgerald, and now wait for this- 75-86% of the people get better. I don’t know why this isn’t front page news everywhere!
We have heard tons about exercise helping obesity, diabetes, weight loss, muscle gain, heart health and even reducing the risk of many cancers but can it really do anything for the brain? Yes, it is pretty impressive!
Brain fog? You don’t feel as sharp as you once were. That should be a wake up call. Something needs to change before things get worse and you get an actual diagnosis of dementia. Maybe you have heard that Alzheimer’s Disease is called Type 3 Diabetes. Not entirely accurate but it gets the point across. Sugar and a processed diet is the enemy of the brain.
My number 1 favorite herb, spice and extract. The spice- turmeric and the extract - curcumin that’s been used for over 5,000 years to help manage pain, swelling, digestion, cholesterol, blood sugar and more. Herbs and spices are rich sources of over 25,000 phytonutrients, -plant-compounds like flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, and polysaccharides, that appear to have anti-aging effects like improving cognitive health, and reducing cardiovascular risks, increasing chromosome telomere length, and enumerable- seemingly unlimited number of metabolic pathways that enhance health. These are built into our DNA to help repair daily damage which is more important every day with our exposure to manmade chemicals and toxins that we are literally swimming in.
