Trying to get to the bottom of where the teenagers are going, Toby goes back to check on Anthea and see if she will give him clues for his mystery. He doesn’t get much help, until he meets two more locals who offer to take him out on their boat to search the islands for the music festival the teenagers are hiding from him.
Back on dry land, things go from bad to worse, back to good again. The police are interested in where he was before David Dearloves office was burnt down – will this derail the investigation?
Toby then finds himself as the object of someone’s affection for all the right (wrong) reasons.

Sprung by the Winstanley’s guests and potentially in the middle of a meeting to plan the downfall of a town, Toby bluffs his way out of a sticky situation, but now he has a new lead – his Airbnb hosts…
He’s then drawn to a scene on the beach with the potential eco-terrorist, getting himself into a bind by offering help her while she goes for a rest. He also gains the attention of the policeman who took his statement at Dawns, is he a suspect while he’s looking for suspects?
All was going well until he finds a very worse for wear Anthea walking along the beach who shares her premonition of a horrible event happening this week.

After breaking the news to David Dearlove, Toby continues the investigation. The leads are all a bit cold, until he finds out that Anthea has headed out on a boat with the bullying teenagers from the beach. Why would she have lied to him?
Trying to get to the bottom of the whether Levi Levarne will be in town and what that might have to do with the New Years threat, he tries to find out more from the teenagers in town and social media posts after HungryHungry70 implies there will be a bomb on New Years Eve.
By the end of the night though, his focus moves onto another generation – is the threat to Ruatuna coming from the retirees who want their quiet town back?

Toby heads out to the peninsula to meet with Dawn – the hermit who is blocking Dearloves development dreams – she seems friendly enough until she inadvertently admits her dark past.
On his way home he stumbles across another lead with a very angry conservationist who is dedicated to protecting the breading grounds of an endangered bird – could she be an eco-terrorist? Feeling more confused than ever, Toby meets the troublesome teens hanging around the beach and connects with a likeminded teenage girl, getting an insight into their New Years plans – a famous popstar coming to town.
After regathering himself, Toby gets a call from Dawn and while trying to help finds himself in the middle of a crime scene, with a twist for his investigation.

After escaping his security conscious and geriatric Air BnB hosts, Lynn and Stan Winstanley, Toby finally makes it out into the small town of Ruatuna. Starting at the local drinking hole he meets the vigilant and close-knit locals and doesn’t get a very warm reception.
He does get one lead though, David Dearlove – the town’s much loathed property developer trying to make Ruatuna a town for the metropolitan elite of Aotearoa. The town hates him, and he hates the town - Could he be trying to threaten the locals to buy it up cheap?
