Tom the Preacher

Will you be in God's Faith Hall of Fame?
Obviously, you won't make it in Hebrews 11. We neither add nor take away from God's completed Scripture. But your story is being written, recorded, and remembered in the annals of heaven. God hears your prayers and sees your actions, and He promises to reward us for our works of faith here on earth.

It seems strange to include Rabab in God's Faith Hall of Fame.
After all, she was a Gentile harlot living in Jericho, a city known for its pagan worship and debauchery. Of course, that's not why she made the Hall of Fame. She made it because she told a lie! How strange it that?!

Are you on the offensive in your Christian life?
Until now, our examples from God's Faith Hall of Fame (Hebrews 11) have focused on salvation (Abel), walking with God (Enoch), heeding a warning (Noah), having a baby (Abraham and Sarah), and making choices that honor God even if those choices involve suffering (Moses). These are all personal in nature.
But now, the writer of Hebrews transitions to spiritual conquest. Joshua was going to lead the sons of Israel into the promised land, but there were enemies that must be vanquished before victory could be attained.

Can I let you in on a little secret?
Sometimes, God leads us to a place that is scary -- even dangerous. Certainly, that's what happened when God led Moses and the sons of Israel out of Egypt right toward the Red Sea. All seemed fine until Pharoah and his army pursued their former slaves. The Red Sea in front of them, Pharoah behind them; Moses and his people were trapped. Ever felt this way yourself?

Imagine living in Egypt during the time of the Ten Plagues God sent upon them.
The Israelites had been enslaved for 400 years. Pharaoh, the Egyptian king, hardened his heart and refused to let the Israelites go, so God sent plagues of judgment upon the land. The last and most dreadful plague was about to be unleashed; God was going to pass through Egypt and strike the firstborn of all the Egyptians. What a terrifying prospect! What would you do in such a situation?

Our choices have consequences. This should be obvious, but evidently, for many people, it isn't. What's even less obvious is our tendency to make poor choices we think are in our best interest, only to find out later how wrong we were.
