The typical combat tour during the Vietnam War was 1 year. Robert Lee Rice was there for more than 3 years.

Mr. Rice arrived in Vietnam in late December of 1965. He fought for about six months before he was shot in the hip. Robert Rice told me, "my problems didn't start until after I got shot." Rice went to the hospital. When he got out he didn't go straight back to his unit, so he was considered AWOL. That was the first time he got into some trouble. After that Rice had 4 special court martials and was in the stockade four times before leaving Vietnam.

It is Thanksgiving and one thing we are thankful for is all of the incredible people we met so far this year.

That includes Medal Of Honor recipient Leroy Petry.

Of the 40 million people who have served in the United States Military only 3,517 have received the Medal of Honor.

Only 66 are still living.

Back in September I had the opportunity to talk to one of those 66 living recipients, retired Army Master Sgt. Leroy Petry.

Saturday is Veterans Day.

This year in Chattanooga there have been several important veteran related stories.

Signal Mountain's Larry Taylor received the Medal of Honor. Taylor is the first Medal of Honor recipient from Southeast Tennessee since the 1950's.

Also, Chattanooga and Hamilton County are working on a project to house homeless veterans.

I talked to Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly about these stories and much more.

On October 10th, Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly announced a project designed to help the homeless veteran population.

The city was awarded at least $12.5 million to create a campus to house homeless veterans with resources on-site to support that community.

This project is a partnership  with the people behind the Heart of a Lion Foundation, non-profit Frontline Response, and others.

If you followed the story of our country's newest Medal of Honor Recipient you have likely seen or heard from or about Dave Hill.

Hll is the last surviving member of the team of Army Rangers that Larry Taylor saved during the combat action that would eventually earn him the Medal of Honor.

Dave Hill also started the effort to get Captain Taylor's Silver star upgraded. During six and a half year process he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help put the nomination packets together, talked to lawmakers and the Pentagon as well did interviews with news outlets like this one to keep this story about Larry Taylor alive.

On his fifth day of his term as National Commander of the American Legion, Daniel Seehafer attended the Medal of Honor ceremony for Cpt. Larry Taylor from Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
