When your goal is to send zero food to landfills by 2025, you have to get very creative with your research and solutions.  That is exactly what Francesca Goodman-Smith has done in her role as the Waste Minimisation Manager at Foodstuffs, New Zealand's biggest grocery distributor with the largest group of supermarkets. We will learn what is being done throughout New Zealand with unused food to bring it to its highest value and back into the food supply chain.

#11 Wasted food is the food that can otherwise be eaten but is thrown away. This waste costs money — estimates are that families of four can save anywhere from $1600 – $2200 a year by not throwing as much food away. And it costs our environment because food that rots in landfills turns into a greenhouse gas that makes the earth hotter. Seeing the tons of excess produce left in fields in addition to massive amounts of remnants from large scale fresh-cut facilities going to landfills, Anna Hammond saw an opportunity to address the urgent need of food insecurity, food waste and its and environmental impact. With the same basic principle our grandmothers lived by for generations, “use it don’t waste it”, she founded Matriark Foods. In this episode we learn about how Anna and her business partner Joyce Huang, CFO/COO, created their business with the vision of upcycling large quantities food bound for landfill, providing access to healthy food for schools, hospitals, food banks, and all places where people are fed at a large scale every day while simultaneously having a positive impact on our environment.

Being awestruck in high school by the enormous amount of perfectly good food going to waste and learning about the newly formed Food Recovery Network, Wes Hopkins immediately volunteered to help.  His experience and passion eventually led him to an internship with a new startup company founded by Ben Simon called Hungry Harvest. From the early days of knocking on doors trying to sell boxes of “ugly fruits and veggies” to now being a significant part of the fast-growing national company Imperfect Foods, Wes has truly charted an unconventional path to his position as Chief of Staff with a company’s whose mission is to “eliminate food waste and build a better food system for everyone”. In this episode, we learn about what it takes to get a company like imperfect Foods started, and what happens when you encounter growing pains along the way. One major key to success seems to be the importance of keeping your eye on the mission at all times!
