We have made it to the final episode of season one!

Too Human for Words is the podcast where we discuss the similarities we experience in our health challenges that we have in common and how we can use those similarities as powerful information to build better systems, utilize our resources better and build stronger communities beyond the labels.

Today we chat to Ruwani De Silva. Ruwani experienced chronic anxiety while studying weather science. We discuss how Ruwani used the concept of mapping weather patterns to track her emotions and the power of finding ways to understand and express invisible illness. This story of lived experience really highlights that value that comes out of some of our hardest times. We reflect on the power of just being present for each other without expectation or judgement. We all have a brain, everyone is touched in some way by mental health. There is nothing to be ashamed of by struggling with mental health and by educating ourselves we can all build strength by being open in our vulnerability.

Happy New Year! Today we sneak into to 2021 an interview with Rheumatologist, Head of the Medical Course at Monash University and Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor Michelle Leech of Monash University in Melbourne.

We cover a whole lot from moving forwards with digitally empowered patients and the value of the patient voice, social media and isolation,

the idea of giving real hope and removing fear in health care, how medical validation impacts quality of life, and the emotional impacts of the phrase "the burden of disease" to individuals and the community.

We also hear about Prof. M. Leech's experience with breast cancer and the perspective she gained returning to work as a medical professional after being a patient with a critical illness.

Salisa Doust joins us today to chat about the reality of a breast reduction. It is a perfect example of how from the outside we don't see all of the physical and emotional chronic issues that contributed to needing a breast reduction. We dive deeper into the stigma of breast implants versus reductions and how it feels for it to be validated as medically necessary.

Welcome to the first real life episode Too Human For Words! I’m so excited that you’re here, we have so much to talk about. In this podcast we talk about the things that we have in common as humans that we don’t usually discuss but if we did what we could do with that information. As a community of people with chronic illness, disability, invisible illness, critical illness or to be more specific anyone that suffers from something that impedes life or quality of life for three months or longer we are all valid in this discussion. When we take away labels our community is everywhere and this information can help us lift quality of life for everyone.

In this episode I was lucky enough to talk to Andrew Taylor. 

Andrew Taylor found accidental fame by mistakenly posting his video journal publicly on YouTube, when he ate potatoes for a year to manage his food addiction. 

We chat about his experience of accidentally going viral, telling friends about his plan, how jokes about appearance affect men just as much as women and so much more. Andrew is a wealth of knowledge and so generous about sharing his experience to help others. We look at how physical and mental health intertwine with masculinity and discuss the value of living more simply.

Hi, nice to meet you! I'm Sasha and I'm a human. I'm a human who has struggled with that fact and the reality of that for a really long time. I have a couple of chronic illness, and I've supported my family through their health challenges such as when my Mum had Breast Cancer. For so long I had been struggling to give my body the attention it needed feeling that it wasn't important enough or bad enough. I was shocked to see that as I was supporting my Mum we had SO much in common! A lot of our symptoms and struggles were the same even though the biology of our illnesses were different. It really blew my mind and made me realize that we should all be considered important. Whether your struggle is life threatening or quality of life threatening they are both just as IMPORTANT. What would happen if rather than having chronic illness and critical illness on opposing side of our empathy we realized that both are valid? We can build more effective systems, utilize our resources better and build stronger communities that are not diagnosis or experience based. In this podcast I brainstorm with guests on how we can recognizing our similarities to build a more proactive, inclusive world. I will be speaking to medical professionals along with people who have lived experience delving into these very human issues. This is not just an illness podcast, it's a human podcast. No one is Too Human For Words.
