  • #98: Candy Marcum, Counselor extraordinaire teaches us about the Gottman Method for couples counseling and much more
Candy Marcum is back and in this episode we learn that she specializes in couples therapy and uses the Gottman method to assess.
John Gottman is a psychologist and typically psychologists are not talk therapists, they are researchers. He studied couples for 40 years and can tell with 96% accuracy
if a couple will make it or not by looking for the 4 horsemen in his method.
The 4 horsemen are as follows:
    1. If a person is critical and always blaming
    2. If a person is contentious, always thinking they are so much better than their partner.
    3. If a person is defensive
    4. If a person is stonewalling
When you see a couple and that is all that they are doing, they are not going to make it unless they go through counseling.
Candy teaches her clients to use the “I” word instead of the blaming “YOU” word…..
She teaches us so much about how to resolve conflicts in relationships. She emphasizes to always look for the good and not concentrate so much on the bad.
She helps couples find common ground in conflicts. She says that in every conflict there is a cry for something.
We talk about the different morals and values couples have in their relationships. She helps couples find compromise.
She talks about the heartbreaks and joys and successes of being a counselor.
Gabrielle then asks Candy’s advice about having so many people in her life that are alcoholics and addicts and how it has affected her. Candy says that when people are in their addiction nobody is more important
    than the next fix.
She encourages Gabrielle to go to ALANON and Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings to try to find some peace about the situation.
We absolutely love Candy’s calm and nurturing way of counseling.
She tells us that she is very involved with the LGBTQ community and the human rights campaign. She chaired that organization for 4 years after being involved for over 10 years.
She informs us about the GLBT Chamber of Commerce. She serves on the foundation board of the GLBT Chamber.
Candy is a GLBT Counselor but she also has many straight clients.

She says that there is nothing more rewarding than touching someone’s life and making a difference.
We then learn about Candy’s upbringing in Springfield, Texas.
She tells us that she is a Lesbian and dealing with that issue has formed who she is. She believes that people should be who they are, as long as they don’t hurt other people.
We find out how her family reacted when she came out at age 17 in 1967 when it was not accepted and there was no word for it.
We learn that she has been with the same woman for the last 32 years and they got married on their 30th anniversary, and it still made Candy nervous.
Candy explains that the point of view of being a gay or lesbian used to be that it was a mental illness. Because of that Candy was inspired to become a professional therapist to learn about herself and help others.
Candy tells us about an international organization called www.PFLAG.org, which stands for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
If anyone is dealing with this issue contact them and they are very helpful and you are accepted.
Candy shares the story when she first opened her private practice and at the same time helped a friend Howie Dare with his gay counseling center that was called Oak Lawn Counseling Center.
She shares the heartbreaking stories of young men in their late 20’s coming to see her and inviting the parents only for the men having to tell them that they are gay and dying of AIDS.
She says it was such a difficult time to counsel those young men who were dying, at the same time the people she officed with were dying, her friends were dying. Everyone was dying and she said it
felt like being in a war.
In 1996 the AIDS cocktail came out and saved a lot of lives. She tells us that there is something called PREP now that protects you before you have sex and you will not get the disease.
We discuss how even today the community of Homeless in the LGBTQ community is huge in 2019.
3 out of 10 teen suicides are because of LGBTQ issues. Candy says that things definitely have changed, but not enough where all are safe.
She thinks sometimes you have to go back to go forward.

  • #96: From Popular High School Jock to being tossed into the world of Prostitution – hear Milani's traumatic life story
Milani is back with the continuation of his traumatic life story. Having been in prison for 2 years and repeatedly being raped with no condoms, he was very worried about getting tested when he got out.
    He tells us the results.
Besides being a stripper he is also on an app called “RENTMEN” which is a secure way to hire escorts.
We talk about people that are super judgmental, but have so many skeletons in their own closets and then he shares that lots of married men with children seek out guys like him.
He tells us that the gay community does not support the gay community in the strip club world. They all swoon over straight guys and pay them way more.
He says there is an infatuation with straight married men that strip in gay clubs and they worship the ground they walk on.
He says that lots of straight guys like to peer in the gay community to get the gay Dollars, only to go back to the straight community and their marriages like Aaron Carter and Nick Jonas for example.
We ask him if he ever fantasizes about having sex with a straight man and his answer is very interesting.
We ask him how many sexual partners he has had and the answer is astounding.
We ask him the craziest place he has ever had sex.
He then opens up about the most traumatic moment of his life that changed his whole path and where he went from being a super popular, cool Jock in High school, a boy scout of America being tossed into the dark world of prostitution.
His whole life was shattered. He went from having a great life with a promising future to a lonely life where everyone laughed at him and hated him.
The trauma of the majority of people tossing him aside and treating him like yesterday’s news devastated him to the core.
He got hooked up with a pimp that got him hooked on drugs so he could control him and profit off of him.
He was fed a lot of heroin for 4 years.
The only way to get away from it was when he went to prison and was thrown in a solitary confinement room, where he suffered from detox for 2 weeks with no help.
Because of all the trauma that he has been through nothing affects him anymore and he has a lot of abandonment issues.
He tells us that he was at a point where he didn’t care if he died. His pain was so great that he was hoping he would die from an overdose.
Today he suffers from seasonal depression and has nobody to rely on. He has no family.
We ask him if there was one thing he could change about his life what it would be and his answer is heartbreaking.
Milani has a huge heart and his soul is good and he tries to help people all the time to protect them to not go down the same road he did.
We end the show with a twerking lesson.
Gabrielle wants Milani to make goals and go to school to make an exit plan.

  • #95: Meet Milani – just living his colorful life – one experience at a time
Milani tells us that his only job at this time is being a gay stripper. We find out that he grew up in white suburban America, where everyone was “judgy” and “bitchy”.
He found out that he was gay at age 16, but never had a chance to really process and decide to come out on his own, because of a dramatic event at his High School that exposed him to everyone without his consent.
He has not had a relationship with his parents or siblings in years and he feels bad that he has not put more effort into that.
He grew up in an abusive household and went straight into an abusive relationship. He was too young to realize all that was happening to him. The guy who he thought loved him manipulated him into being an escort and was a Pimp.
Milani then took the fall for everything when he got caught selling cocaine, after selling to an undercover cop 3 times.
He says that there was a point where he stopped being a victim but became a willing participant. He was living his best life.
He went to prison for 2 years. He tells us how much it sucks being in prison as a gay person. He shares that he got raped a lot until he found himself a Puerto Rican boyfriend who protected him.
We feel like Milani got dealt a really bad hand in life, because we see his kind and caring heart and we tell him how bad we feel for him. He matter of factually tells us that Life is what it is.
You have to listen to him tell us about refusing to accept the early release from prison, because he was so in love with his boyfriend, who betrayed him the second he left prison, only to go back to his wife and never talk to Milani again.
When he first came to Texas he landed in Roanoke with a guy he met on Craigslist and was hugely disappointed. But once he saw Dallas and started working at the gay strip clubs he fell in love with the City.
He shares the story of when he was a houseboy for a gay couple in Cedar Springs which is a gay neighborhood in Dallas.
You have to hear him talk about having sex with girls and what he thinks about that.
Milani has an entrepreneurial spirit and loves to learn from business people and is planning an exit strategy out of this dark whore world soon.
But for now he finds his Sugar Daddies in Strip Clubs and is a Sugar Daddy himself to young, handsome boys.
This is the end of the first episode with Milani – stay tuned for the next episode where we get even more details about his very interesting life.

  • #91: Meet Jason Bee, Director, Producer, Writer and Actor of the Movie Donovan – a movie about bipolar disorder
We welcome Jason Bee who released a movie called Donovan, which is about a recently divorced father and the struggles of bipolar disease.
Jason stars in the movie as himself about himself.
He tells us that when he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the 90’s he didn’t take it seriously and used it as an excuse to do stupid things, sex, drugs and alcohol to name a few.
In 2007 he had a massive psychotic breakdown and it was in that moment that he was either going to kill himself or be a father to his son. He chose the latter.
We go back to his chaotic childhood and learn that his Dad left the family when Jason was 3 years old which left him with severe abandonment issues.
He wrote, produced, directed and acted in the movie and even wrote some of the songs. Both his sons also act in the movie.
It took 7 years from start to finish before releasing the movie.

Jason’s 2 children are the reason that keep him from doing the unimaginable.
Jason wants to thank Johnny Marr for his tremendous help featuring “New Town Velocity” in the movie Donovan. You can get this single and countless others at johnny-marr.com.
