From A New Hope to Return of the Jedi, Luke's character arc was developed realistically and heroically as he triumphed not only through the evil of Darth Vader, but through his own failures, eventually becoming the Jedi Knight we know him to be at the end of Jedi once he brought Anakin Skywalker back from Vader and Palpatine's grasp.
