First anticipation then waste of time and money !!
This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I really liked "Gr??nne Skove", and was looking forward to this one. And what a letdown. Spine less "plot", bad story telling. Aamund has done so much better in her previous books.
What could Jane Aamund have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
She could have started by actually making a fascinating plot - make that ANY plot, which never happened. As the story drags it's feet along Aamund just kills off the characters when there she has no more use for them. One girl gets murdered on a street in Buenos Aires, the Danish girl gets her gaucho boy, Her parents, the two main characters suddenly get inflicted with cancer just when one thinks the story is about to catch on. And just like that, the whole shooting match is over. Please no sequel here !!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
By telling the whole story in a nasal monotone. Believe me, this "story" needs all the help it can get. On the flip side, I do not believe any narrator could have saved this dog.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Sadness and disappointment, knowing how well Jane Aamund can write and sound. I just cannot believe she would let this product leave her hard disc.
    Any additional comments?
Above is enough criticism. I have plenty of respect for Aamund. Just listened to the interview "Lys i Livet" on audio book. Entertaining stuff. She is funny and has had her share of life's curve balls, that she keeps deflecting and surviving in the process. I wish her well, and I hope she has some good books still left in her. She does not bat 1000 every time she is at plate, and this is a good example.

    Zulu Hart by Saul David
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well written and the story is fast moving, colourful and gripping, The historical background of the Zulu wars brings the fiction to life. The ending begs for a sequel, mysteries have yet to be solved. The narrator, Jonathan Keeble, is a master of regional accents, adding to the depth of the tale. Brilliant.
    Outstanding read
I am not really a military book person. But this was outstanding. Saul David is an exceptional writer. His detailed descriptions and way with words had me gripping the edge of my seat.
    Outstanding read.
Great start and premise, let down by second half
The set up to this book along with the building of the main character are fantastic, you really get exited for the journey he is undertaking and are right there with him though ups and downs. However about halfway though this all goes away, new characters introduced are forgettable and the plot losses itself. Good battle scenes and obviously a first rate historian but let down slightly by the storytelling.
    A penny dreadful
Saul David had written quite a good book about the Zulu wars .....unfortunately this is not it.
Mr David has taken as the inspiration for his book two sources, the collected works of Bernard Cornwell and an anthology of the Victorian penny dreadful. Trite hackneyed plot, a succession of superiors out to get him ....and a plethora of one dimensional characters ....this book has them all.
Some have mentioned this work in the same breath as the name of George MacDonald Fraser and his Flashman novels ....in your dreams Mr David ...in your dreams.
On the up side however the narrator does a very good job and I hope to hear more of him ....and that next time he is given a better book to read.
    fantastic
awsome absolutely awesome ive watced the movies about the Zulu wars many times and this novel is now a proud part of that collection from start to finish i was totally enthralled well done to all involved in this book it fill in some gaps that i oftern wonderd about welldone again and thank you.

    interesting read and well written
i received this book and i really enjoyed it...very interesting story...i like the way this author writes...not flowery or rambling
    The Traitors Wife
L0ved this book. Lots of history, whitch is really important to me. I like books that tell a story and educate me at the same time. Bought the book at Amazon and it arrived in timely fashion.
beware Kathleen Kent fans, this is "The Wolves of Andover" under a different title
I was very disappointed when I sat down to read this book, thinking it would be the 3rd book by Kathleen Kent. It is a renamed version of "The Wolves of Andover" to market it in England. There should be some kind of info out there to that effect, so that I a. wouldn't have wasted my $ and b. even worse, was so disappointed not to have a new Kathleen Kent book to read. Bad Publisher!
    Prelude to "The Heretic's Daughter"
A slow read, but it set up the premise for "The Heretic's Daughter." Explained why the mother was so stern with her children and gave a glance into the father's history.
interesting book about the witches of Salem
I love Kathleen Kent's style of writing, and this book was again very interesting, a prequel of sorts for her other book, 'the Heretic's daughter' on the same subject.

Length: 9 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-02-11
    Publisher: Isis Publishing Ltd
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Dick Coward is an ordinary chap in extraordinary circumstances. World War II's answer to Flashman, only much more honourable Dick's a Coward by name but not by nature. Storming the Normandy beaches with the green berets of 47 (RM) Commando, Coward is protected by his long-suffering batman (and head groom to his estate) Price, for whom *noblesse oblige* died long ago at Passchendaele. But there are worse things than war, not least the horrific possibility that the family estate might fall into the hands of Cowards ghastly, undeserving brother. Only by amassing sufficient military glory to appease his father and living to tell the tale can Coward guarantee that justice prevails.
    Critic Reviews:
"Tempered by the carnage of war, Dicks antics have more meat and less sauce than those of his antecedent Flashman." (Financial Times)
"Extremely funny... very moving. The research is exemplary, and like the best historical fiction, woven seamlessly into the narrative. Truly compelling." (Sunday Telegraph)
    Members Reviews:
Great fun to listen to, well written as well.
I thought this book was great fun to listen to. Lots of action and plenty of history with the main character happening to be wherever the main events were happening. If you like historical fiction, and would like something a bit better written and faster moving than most, you'll love this. The other book (Coward at the Bridge) is also a lot of of fun.
Ok but I may have missed the point
This book is interesting and has lots going on. It so nearly is very good and funny, but it doesn't quite make it. Not sure if its meant to be funny, or is told seriously and is funny by chance.
    exellent listen
The main characters are Lt Coward and Sgt Price and their antics during the Normandy landings. History and humour all rolled into one. One of those listens you have trouble putting down. I would recomend it to anyone and can't wait for more to become available

"...teenage girls in particular will be drawn to this moving story." (Education Guardian)
    Members Reviews:
    Never Read This Book
I am 13 years old and I read this book as part of a unit on the Reformation. I didn't like it. I liked the history but not the way she described the history. She added a little too much romance. She used her imagination too much in trying to recreate the story, though I liked the way she went between Lady Jane Grey, who was of the new faith (Protestant), and Ned, who is with Mary Tudor and is of the old faith (Catholic). Ned is her love interest and in the end he chops off her head. He asks for this task, just to be able to see her again. The ending of the book is kind of freaky. It says her body stayed there all day. No ravens came to peck at her eyes or the flesh hanging from her neck. And he was surprised at how much blood could come from such a small body. I would never recommend this book to anyone.
The first Jane Gray tale that I have read in which I ended up not liking either the character or the book.
I have loved the subject of Jane Gray for as long as I can remember. I read everything about her that I can get my hands on. This is not the first book that I have read portraying her in a somewhat negative light, but it is the first that I have read in which I ended up not liking either the character or the book.
In "Raven Queen," Jane seemed to be a mean-hearted and unaccepting person. I understand that her belief in her faith was unbreakable. But this book made her out to be a person who was unaccepting of anyone not of the New Faith, even those she claimed to love. She was mean spirited to her sisters, degrading in her thoughts about her royal cousins. Of course she also had repellant thoughts regarding her parents and the Dudley family, but those can be excused if you know anything about either family.
I donât know if it was all the negativity that made me dislike this book, or if it was that I just donât like the idea of my idolized Jane being anything other than what I have come to see her as. The forced teenage queen made a martyr by her power-hungry family.
interesting look at a historical character
This is the fictional story of Lady Jane Grey as a young woman, before she became Queen of England. She saves the life of a boy who was about to be hanged and gets him a job on her family estate. They slowly and secretly become friends and fall in love.
This is an interesting look at a historical character I wasn't familiar with. I found it a bit hard to connect with both Jane and Ned. Everything seemed a bit too formal to truly get to know them. I really don't get how they developed a friendship and fell in love. That part is rather obscured and quick. Their relationship was easier to believe once they were separated and loved only from afar.
Jane's quirks were interesting. I don't know if they were real or not, but they did lend a bit of depth to her character.

After the horrors of D-Day, Lt Dick Coward and Sgt Tom Price find themselves plunged into even greater chaos as they land in the deceptively tranquil countryside around Arnhem, as part of Operation Market Garden. What should be a pushover turns into Britain's biggest military disaster of the Second World War. But if it's a cock-up, by golly is it a glorious one. Rarely if ever have Allied soldiers acquitted themselves better than in their bid to capture "The Bridge Too Far." As usual Coward and Price are in the thick of it. If Coward doesn't get a VC this time, he'll be booted off the family estate, and stand no chance of winning the heart of the fickle Gina.
    Members Reviews:
    well worth purchasing
The was an excellent listen with humour and history in one . Lt Dick Coward and Sgt Tom Price the main characters, the later trying with his feet firmly on the ground tries to keep the other in check. I would recomend this listen to anyone and one I started it I had trouble putting it down
Funny Fiction with plenty of history too
Really enjoyable, with quite a bit of adult humour. The main character is involved in lots of Market Garden related fights with plenty of interesting WW2 factoids along the way. It must have taken a lot of research to write, but it's so well written that you forget about all that and just enjoy it.

Those Pearly Gates: A Homegrown Novel
Julie Cannon was in fine form when she wrote this series. I am a gardener and am from the South which is one reason this whole series spoke to me so warmly. The characters are realistic and wholesome (something I do not find often). I did not want the book to end for I had been truly swept away for a while.
    Prophetic
Reading this peek into her southern outlook and knowing what happens to her latter makes this book even more precious (in the best sense of the word).
    Five Stars
    Great book.
Another fabulous book! A great family saga for sure-A++
In this third book by Julie Cannon, it picks up now with Imogene, the main character who is now married to Rev. Lemuel, after promising his late wife, her best friend Martha, that she would do so. The chemistry though, isn't really right, and it seems that no matter what Imo does, she just can't get into what a preacher's wife is 'supposed' to do. Her friend Wanda, at the Kut n' Kurl is having a real snit about Imo taking Martha's place in the minister's life, so she refuses to give her the famous recipe for Jam Cake, as she feels Imo shouldn't have to be part of the family.
Loutishie, Imo's niece is now a senior in high school. She doesn't really care for the Rev. Lemuel very much, and when he wants to sell the precious farmhouse, and move into the parsonage, Loutishie is beyond anger with him, as the farmhouse is her beloved land with the garden she and Imo share together.Lou absolutely refuses to leave there, and once she hears of this news, she goes and remains at the farmhouse, refusing to come back to the parsonage and discuss anything with the Reverend.
And Jeanette, Imo's other girl is married and settled down with the minister Montgomery. As time goes along though, she has an obvious serious medical problem as she is experiencing many bad fainting spells. She refuses to go the doctor until her problem escalates, and she becomes deathly ill finally.
Reverend Lemuel is also having a problem driving, and having very close calls behind the wheel. After many near-tragic accidents, poor Imo has to drive him around all over the place and on visitations, etc., until she is worn to a frazzle.
A tragedy happens during the last part of the book with one of Imo's dearest friends, Lillian. Imo tries to help her out of a very grave depression along with everything else.
    Those Pearly Gates is divine!
If you enjoy Jan Karon's Mitford Series, you'll love Julie Cannon's Homegrown Series! (Truelove and Homegrown Tomatoes, 'Mater Biscuit, and newly released Those Pearly Gates).

    Publisher's Summary:
Deed So, a coming-of-age story, takes place in a small Southern town in 1962. It was the last year of innocence - the year before the Kennedy assassination, the civil rights struggle, feminist activism, and the Vietnam War changed America forever.
Brainy 12-year-old Agnes Hayden "Haddie" Bashford wants nothing more than to leave Wicomico Corners and escape to the exciting world beyond its narrow, tradition-bound borders. A series of shocking incidents brings the outside world crashing down on her backward village, exposing long-buried family secrets and setting Haddie on a collision course with an unstable firebrand who will have to silence her to protect his identity.
Deed So is a novel in the tradition of To Kill a Mockingbird, laying bare the issues that marked the Sixties as a turning point in American History.
    Critic Reviews:

"Russell has penned an interesting story of a young girl coming of age in a rapidly changing world...." (Foreword Clarion)
    Members Reviews:
    Great story, super fast narrator
I thought the story was great! Race relations in the 1960's through the eyes of a middle school-aged girl.
The main narration was done by a lady, but all of the male parts were read by a guy...that was kinda cool. However, the lady read very fast (in my opinion) and there were not really any pauses between the end of the last sentence of a chapter and the beginning of the next chapter.
So, I recommend the story, but make sure you listen to the sample of the narrator to hear the book speed before you use your credit.
