Great way to introduce nonfiction to young children!
The Spectacular World of Waldorf series by Beth Ann Stifflemire and Barbara Terry is absolutely wonderful! I received all four books that are currently available in the series, and I couldnât be more impressed. My three year old twin boys were ecstatic when I opened the package and took the books out. They immediately began going through, pointing at the pictures, talking about the book, and asking questions. I can definitely see these books going over well with younger children, especially ages 2-8. The illustrations are brightly colored and full of activity, and the dialogue is informative, but in a fun, entertaining way that is relatable to children.
Each of the four books I received involves a dog, whose name is Mr. Waldorf, visiting different places all around the world. In the books he explores many of the things that make the state or country unique. He explores famous landmarks and explains what they are, tries the food the place is known for, and gets to know the people from the place he is exploring. An example of this is the book about Texas. Mr. Waldorf meets football players, which highlights the importance of football in Texas, and he also visits the Alamo in San Antonio. There are many more examples in the book about Texas, as well as the other books. The four books that I have involve Mr. Waldorf visiting Texas, Alaska, Russia, and China. My twinsâ favorite one is Texas, because there are cowboys and horses included in the story.
I love that these books are written on a childâs level, yet they are introducing children to nonfiction, and children are learning real things about places they probably know very little about. Nonfiction reading comprehension has become extremely important with the introduction of the Common Core Standards in schools. I believe that books such as these are a great way to introduce nonfiction to your children, and to help them see the differences between fiction and nonfiction. These books are well-written, illustrated, and easy to read. Itâs obvious that a lot of thought and research went into choosing what to include in them.
