It's a little like making a loaf of bread...

The other half of my heart is much like making a loaf of bread.

It requires attention, and time to formulate the finished product. The process is, at times, complex and the end result is delightful but somewhat expected.

Now I've finished with the similes, we can get into the review. The characters were very realistic. I quite liked the damaged quality of them all in the beginning, they felt like real people, but things got a little tedious about 60% through. I wanted to see more character development. It felt like it was all a little too slow.

The plot and character arcs were obvious from about 20% in. So if you like your books to be a bit mysterious you probably won't like this one. If you enjoy a quiet, sweet romp through a slightly romance-ish story with middle-aged protagonists then jump on board.

If you like horses this one is a story for you. In fact, this reminded me of a grown up version of the Saddle club books, aimed at adults but maintaining that horsey-focus which was a welcome change from the rather adult books I normally read. I enjoyed being immersed in the world of working on a horse farm and the way in which the romance blossomed. I feel the book was strongest in the opening chapters, but slowly things got a bit out of focus.

The overall feel of the book could have been emotional, and some of the other reviews are raving on about is as such, but I feel that the middle of the book disconnected me from the characters too much, and then the emotional turmoil I was meant to feel, just didn't happen. There's sad parts, sure, but they didn't pack the punch I think they were meant to.

Still, the book is a solidly written, the storyline is tried and true, and the characters are complex. It just wasn't spot on for me, hence the lower star rating. Still worth a read if you like horses or long winding plots with a middle-aged protagonist.

This is a very bittersweet read, one that really held my attention to the end. Bettina (which reminds with Retina) owns her own bakery and is in a ânot quite aâ relationship with her neighbour Rufus, the reasons for which are kept very close to her chest for quite a lot of the story. Fifteen years ago her life was very different, until she suffered a crushing tragedy from which she has never recovered, one that left her scarred both physically and emotionally.

Festive

Thea and Sean want to get married and they want to do it on Christmas Day. They want a small and cozy wedding. There will be a few guests and it's supposed to become a fun and relaxing day. Unfortunately not everything is going according to plan. It isn't easy to talk things through when you live miles apart and some unexpected surprises from the past are making things difficult. Thea's sister is also causing trouble. Will Thea have a happy wedding after all or has she made another mistake in love?

A Merry Mistletoe Wedding isn't as funny as It Must Have Been the Mistletoe, but it is a wonderful sweet story. Because it's mostly about the months before the wedding it can easily be read at any time of year. I enjoyed this story a lot, especially the ending which is very romantic. It was nice to read another story about Thea and her family. I loved finding out more about all the different characters. I think Judy Astley has written a really lovely sequel.

What I like about Judy Astley's writing is that it flows easily. She has a great sense of humor and she knows how to make her characters come to life. I enjoy reading about big family Christmases and love an amusing feel good story. I could read happy holiday stories all the time. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

a slice of life's dark side

Gilgamesh lives with his sister in a "sad yellowing trailer with the broken door jamb." his childhood pal and now boyfriend Trap stays with them as well. the violent death of their friend Angelo Ramirez or RC at the hands of a police officer affects Gilgamesh profoundly that he begins to see and hear strange horrifying things. one day, when he makes a decision, events spiral out of control and affect everyone around him.

drugs, death, violence and despair cling to the characters and permeate the pages of this short book from start to finish. it is a depressing, tragic and violent portrayal of people whose dreams of a good life, love and success - dreams which only mirror those of the rest of humanity - remain elusive.

the major players are an interesting batch and Trap appears to be the most level-headed among them. he is sweet, helpful and keeps everything in balance. Gilgamesh and his sister bear their own scars but it is those on Gilgamesh which seal his undoing.

as part of Gilgamesh's "haunting," a demon called Zozo manifests itself. except for Gilgamesh, no one senses or sees Zozo and i think there really is no demon at all but Zozo is symbolic - a metaphor for Gilgamesh's angst-ridden mental state.

as for the conclusion, i was not prepared for it. it left me dazed and shocked for a brief moment and i wish things could have ended differently for Gilgamesh and the rest of the crew.

i would have wanted to give this a higher rating but there were a few typos and errors that threw me off. for example, "through" appeared twice for the word "threw."

- "RC through an empty chip bag at the officer..."

- "Gilgamesh picked up a random object and through it at Queen's head."

these and the others i saw could have easily been avoided though.

nevertheless, i was quite affected by the story. the author has the skill to grab the reader's attention, to lead him out of his comfort zone and to look closer at a slice of life's dark side albeit reluctantly. if not for this, i would have stopped reading already past the first ten pages

Take me back to Wishing Rock!

I love Wishing Rock! The Wishing Rock Theory of Life develops through a series of written communications by and among the town's inhabitants who all live and work in the same large building. Author Pam Stucky skillfully drew me into a warm circle of friends through their texts, emails, letters, and newsletters. She has created a cast of individuals having distinct quirks, senses of humor, and worldviews. Their correspondence ranges from thoughtful discussions of relationships lost or changed, to a newsy travelogue about Switzerland or Scotland, to speculation about a newly-arrived mystery woman or the whereabouts of a hidden treasure, to a hilarious description of a mud-bath, to the mundane details of everyday life. While reading the characters' intimate correspondence initially felt voyeuristic, very quickly I found myself mentally composing answers to emails as if I were actually a recipient. It came as a shock every time I realized I couldn't join in any of the conversations.

To say that Texas author Frank âZeusâ Marcopolos is an experimental author would be a massive understatement. In his non-literary life he has been a former U.S. paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and NCAA baseball player. As a writer he explores profound themes without losing the kinds of exciting plotlines that keep a reader engaged in a story. He has authored a colorful set of books - Almost Home: The New Paltz Novel, Infinite Ending: Ten Stories, A Car Crash of Sorts, and The Whirligig Literary Magazine: Issues 3 - 9, 2000-2006. Frank knows how to take off color subjects, twirl them around his solid imagination and spread them out on the page with a vocabulary that many famous authors would envy, and all the while make us scratch our heads attempting to figure out where he is taking us.

WOMYN DO: THE HEALING OF JOHNNY R3BEL is a psychological examination of a lad with issues â all manner of issues as in clothes choices, relationships, even verbal communication but his major stridor is his lack of ability to relate to women on a satisfactory plane. As the summary states, âJOHNNY R3BEL is unbelievably successful with womyn and in his career. But still, he has a problem he cannot overcome on his own. But can she heal JOHNNY, and in so doing provide a model for healing the world?â And it is this resolution of a plight that make for some of the most winningly bizarre verbiage and thoughts and reading to come along in a while.

Not having read other works by this author is a disadvantage in that this kind of story takes many risks â and succeeds. Is that style, or is this a one-stop show? Time will tell and it will be important to see how he can carry out a full length novel without resorting to gimmicky names and spellings that at times get in the distracting way. Bizarre and Kind of Brilliant

This is not a book for the faint of heart, nor for those who are easily offended by some rather off-color subject matter or speech. Marcopolos is a very unique author, and his earlier published work is evidence of that as well. By striking at the core of some serious issues that we face as two very different genders, the author may be slightly boorish at times, but he is concise and passionate, and endlessly creative. For such a brief and fascinating read, Womyn Do is something that will stick in your memory, as Johnny is not a character that anyone will soon forget. I can't say I'll immediately dig into this author's other work, but I appreciate any writer with a one-of-a-kind voice, and that is certainly what he has. Overall, nicely done, but seriously weird.....
