Publisher's Summary:
Now shes back in Bill Loehfelms new thriller,The Devil in Her Way, and her life has changed in more ways than one: Shes starting over in New Orleans as a newly minted member of the police force.
Kicking off her final week of field training, Maureen takes a punch from a panicked suspect bursting out of an apartment. Her training officer laughs it off, and the incident even yields a small victory: the cops recover a stash of pot and guns. But out on the street, on the fringes of the action, Maureen sees something sinister transpire between two neighborhood boys that leaves her shaken, and she knows theres more to the story than shes seen. As we follow Maureens dangerous hunt for answers, Loehfelm leads us around New Orleans most hidden corners and into its darkest outposts.
Bill Loehfelm is the real deal - a lauded thriller writer in the modern tradition of Dennis Lehane, Richard Price, and Michael Connelly. He knows the voices of his city. Like Lehanes Boston, Prices New York City, or Connellys Los Angeles, Loehfelms New Orleans leaps off the page, as vibrant, flawed, and unruly as his reborn, fire-hearted protagonist. InThe Devil in Her Way, Loehfelms talents flourish, and the result is a ruthless and propulsive thriller.
Critic Reviews:
"
The Devil in Her Wayis not only Bill Loehfelms best book yet - it may just be the best mystery novel to come out of post-Katrina New Orleans since James Lee Burkes
The Tin Roof Blowdown. I can offer no higher praise than to say that I finished it and wanted to read more. A gem." (John Connolly,
New York Timesbest-selling author)
"The Devil in Her Wayhas it all: rapid-fire pacing, dialogue that crackles, an artful depiction of the streets of New Orleans, and - in Maureen Coughlin - an utterly authentic, memorable protagonist. Bill Loehfelm is a terrific writer." (Alafair Burke, author of
Never Tell)
"Bill Loehfelm shows us a deep, gritty New Orleans, far from the tourists. Seen through the eyes of a rookie cop,
The Devil in Her Wayis a story told in arrestingly beautiful prose, full of murder, mayhem, and sno-balls. I love this book and cant wait for the next." (Sara Gran, author of
Come Closer)

A few questions...a goo series.
This series is good, and it grows on you. But I was really turned off by the (male) author's cavalier discussion of her sex life in the first two books. We are big New Orleans fans--two Tulane graduates in the family--we actually evacuated with the storm. Despite Maureen's past, I think he puts her down when he describes her stalking and abusing (bad) men. I have now read each book in sequence, and I applaud the final one, set in Mardi Gras...it is the best compliment to a character that kept me reading despite my dismay at some earlier depictions of her that, frankly, didn't do her innate moral compass justice. Mr. Loehfelm definitely captures New Orleans, and that is hard to do.
Character Driven Crime Fiction
Really liked watching Maureen develop as a character and learning to become a cop in this book. Even though he's now writing about a police officer, Loehfelm stuck with his regular-working-class-person-in-over-their-head element I love in his other books. She's not the know-it-all, super-slick super-cop. She's a trainee screwing up just about everything she touches! Very real and relate-able.
The plot of this story develops well and is intricate.
