    Step back in time
This is a well crafted mystery that takes the reader into the deep south in late 1969. This a period when the United States was going through the turmoil of the Civil Rights movement as well as the early stages of the Vietnam War. But the story goes back even earlier to the time we entered WW II after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The small town of Addison, Georgia has something to hide and they are willing to over look a murder to keep its secret. It all comes together through the eyes of Ramona, a young woman in an abusive relationship, a girl trapped in the middle of a mystery she doesn't seem to understand. She decides to do something about it and we are soon discovering the secrets of nearly everyone in Addison. Kind of a Southern Payton Place, but the characters have more to hide than who they are sleeping with. The characters are so well developed, I felt like I was living with them as the story unfolded. Double Shock is a fast-paced step back in time and an enjoyable read.
    good read
This was a free read from Amazon. I like this author. Her mechanics of good writing are fine. There is no lag time and no verbosity. The book`s climax came first. She killed her husband by electrocution plain as day yet the a
uthorities deemed it an accident. Why? Did she do the town a favor? Or was there something more sinister going on? Was there another shock about to unfold?
Thank you, Ms. Holloway, for sharing your talent.
Decent, but not quite good read.
I don't know...it had real potential. I think the characters could have been a bit more developed. And the "romance"...well, it was rather rushed. Now I can't remember if I'm talking about the book, or my life.
    Poorly written.
The book started out with great promise. There is a murder, and you know who did it, so now you want to read on to find out if she got away with it. Unfortunately, the author stopped dead in the narrative to give every character's back story! While this information MIGHT have been necessary, it should have been worked in much later in the book. I'm not sure where all these good reviews came from because this read like an unedited first attempt by an untrained writer in creating a mystery novel.
    Not Same Old Plots
I don't usually write book reviews I would rather read them and since I usually read at least one a day they get pretty predictable. But this book wasn't.

    Great book - awful narration
Would you consider the audio edition of Homeland: Carrie's Run to be better than the print version?
Definitely not. The narration is terrible.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Homeland: Carrie's Run?
None, as I was not motivated to finish because of the awful narration.
Would you be willing to try another one of Penelope Rawlinss performances?
    No.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
I'm a Homeland fan and I love to listen to audiobooks. So I though this was going to be a very good buy but it wasn't because of the very annoying narration. Surely the author didn't intend all the male characters to come across as obnoxious twats with a stiff upper lip. Because that's how they all sound. I'm not sure why some narrators think that they completely need to alter their voice when they are narrating someone of the opposite sex but some do and Penelope Rawlins is one of them. And she sounds terrible. I have managed to get through just over an hour but I find that I'm not at all motivated to go back to it. I will need to buy the print version because I would love to finish the story though, the one hour I have heard was well written and a promising story.
CARRIE MATHISON: A HEROINE FOR OUR TIMES
Would you listen to Homeland: Carrie's Run again? Why?
Yes. This prequel to the Homeland we know, is written by Andrew Kaplan, who is an American author, best known for his spy thriller novels. We have all yearned for a backstory of Carries life before we first saw her on screen. The story fulfills our longing and is gripping from start to finish.
Who was your favorite character and why?
For fans of the TV series, Homeland, we have all become involved in the life of the key character, CIA operations officer Carrie Mathison and we care about her and want to know more about her. For a fan, this prequel, set in Beirut in 2006, satisfyingly follows Carrie in the edge of the seat twists and turns of her job and her personal life.

After a long period of "resting", life is looking up for Charles Paris, who has been cast as the Ghost of Hamlet's Father and First Gravedigger in a new production of Hamlet. Ophelia is played by Katrina Selsey, who won the role through a television talent show. Hamlet himself is also played by a reality TV contestant, Jared Root - and the two young stars have rather different views than the more experienced members of the cast.
But when the company reach the first staging post of their tour, matters get more serious, with one member of the company seriously injured in what appears to be an accident, and another dead. Once again, Charles Paris is forced to don the mantle of amateur detective.

    Wonderful!
I have really enjoyed Simon Brett's Charles Paris dramatisations so thought I would try a full length book. Initially I was disappointed, as Bill Nighy plays Charles so well in the dramatisations and in my head he is Charles Paris. However after a few minutes of listening to Simon Brett's narration I was so caught up in this story that I listened to it over a couple of days and will definitely download some more of these. As in the Fethering mysteries Simon Brett really brings the story and the characters to life. Great for an easy, fun listen.
    Excelent listen
    Any additional comments?
Can't understand why a previous version of this book with a different narrator was allowed to escape. I hated that version, but knowing how much I enjoy Simon's reading, he is Charles Paris to my mind, I decided to give this version a chance. I was not disappointed. In fact I didn't actually remember more than the ending from the other version, which goes to show that the narrator can (and obviously does) make a huge difference.
Looking forward to yet more of Mr Paris in the future.
    Welcome back Charles Paris
It has been wonderful to listen to a new Charles Paris mystery written and brilliantly read by Simon Brett.
The dissolute lifestyle of Charles Paris continues, and his acting career maintains its bottom scraping trajectory, but his ability to solve crimes remains at its charming peak.
    Well done Simon Brett

    Exciting
It took me 2 nights to finish this book. I would have finished it the first night, but I had to go to bed. The story of Brady and Susan is fascinating and exciting. Each twist and turn in the story left me wanting more. The ending was not as I anticipated, which was a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended.
    Four Stars
    good series
    Drama, Action & romance
Wow! Lots of drama, action, love scenes. Every time you think they are safe something else happens. I like Brady and his brothers. They want to do what is right. Help others.
Brady was in the military and now he is hurt. He can't go back. He is lucky that he can even walk again. He walks with pain, he is still going to physical therapy weekly. He keeps feeling sorry for himself, but when his brother the police detective is in trouble, His ex girlfriend is being questioned at the murder of her fiancé. Brady steps up to the plate to help them.
Susan does not remember what happen on Justin's yacht. She woke up with blood on her hands and no Justin. The first policeman on scene was Reily. He called for different officers when he realized who was missing.
Now someone is after Susan and the police think she is guilty. They don't believe she is in danger. Brady is stepping up to the plate to protect her. He knows she would not have done anything to Justin.
Brady hates Justin and Justin hated Brady back. Justin's dad is a three star and has a lot of power. He believes Susan is guilty of murdering his son.
The problems with the book is unanswered questions. How did they keep finding Brady and Susan so fast? What was Justin really up to? The questions just did not totally get answered to my liking.
I want to know more about Connor too?
Lots of action scenes, They were always running away from the bad guys. Car chases, fire. Everyone was looking for Susan and Brady including the police.
I would like to read more from C.J. Miller in the future.
I was given this ebook to read and asked in return to give honest review of it by Netgalley.

Grabbed Hold and Would'nt Let Go
Evidently there are other books involving the Truman brothers and I can't wait to get my hands on them! Shielding The Suspect packed a lot of romance into the huge load of action and suspense plotted in this second chance Romantic Suspense. The pacing was fast, the action intense, the twists and turns came fast and furious and sometimes I needed a break, but wouldn't take one because I had to know what was next!
The character driven romance involving Brady and Susan was oh, so satisfying; their love scenes were steamy and actually added to the story and moved the plot along.

Jake Haddon inherits a house from his uncle. On first viewing it seems innocuous enough, but as the story develops there is a mounting sense of doom. It is obvious that something horrific is going to happen, but not quite what or to whom. This tale of obsession has a pace and momentum that drag the listener to the end.
    Members Reviews:
    Essential
A very small cast of characters is placed within a foreboding landscape of windswept beach and the titular wood, with early indications of an impending disaster. The climax, when it comes, is baroque and horrible and nowhere near what the reader expected. The book is deliberately paced, taking its time to set up the mood and characters, and in this the mastery of P.M. Hubbard is second to none. The setting and the violence it contains will stick in memory for a very long time. Also of particular interest is the ambiguity of the narrator/protagonist: not everything he says should be taken at face value. This is essential reading - one of the best novels of suspense ever written - not for the squeamish, though.
    Dark and brooding!
This is an unrelenting book, and one that is not easy to read. It is a book that I think will haunt me forever. I highly recommend that you read it, but I'm not sure if anyone will see this because I'm the first reviewer on a book that was written in 1968! I had a bit of trouble finding this one, but I'm glad I perservered. Hubbard creates a creepy and relentless book. Do not read this if you're craving comfort in a mystery story. I would mark this as a connoisseur's book. If you like real mystery with all kinds of atmosphere then this is the book for you. I think the most remarkable thing about the book is the tone. It is a beautifully managed tone that is flat and realistic, but sensitive. It creates an atmosphere of desolation and oppression that lead to an inexorable end. You are certain all the way through that something truly horrible is going to happen. This is a true classic!
    Absorbing but unsatisfying writing
Hubbard does effectively carry the reader along with his story, but his characters are all unbelievably obsessive. In the end the motivation seems either lacking or incredible, so the action is unsatisfying. You feel manipulated, as in a horror film that relies too much on music and effects without any actual content.

What bad narration does for a book
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I could have maybe given this 4 or 5 * if the publishers had taken an experienced reader to put this book into words, which would have then made it worth listening to. I turned this off after 22 minutes because the narrator ( the author ) spoke the entire time in a single monotone, which meant I could not get interested in the storyline as it was just too boring.
You need someone who has the experience to bring the characters to life and make the story worth following.
Sorry, but this is one I will be asking for a refund over.
What will your next listen be?
Probably Jeaniene Frost or Kevin Hearne.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Totally monotone narration with no genuflection in the voice. This made it hard to enjoy the book as you could not differentiate between the different characters.
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Only if you need something to send you to sleep.
    Any additional comments?
The publishers made their biggest mistake by using the author to record this audiobook. If they had used somebody who is a regular book narrator and made the characters different voices it might have stood a chance.

    Ultimate letdown
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Anyone who doesn't mind a thriller with no resolution
What was most disappointing about Chris Ewans story?
OK this is a thriller. So to pretend it's some kind of literary oeuvre with no need for tying all the loose ends together is irritating to say the least, especially when you've used up a credit on it!
What about Simon Vances performance did you like?
Simon Vance is, as always, a most accomplished narrator. One cannot fault him.
    Any additional comments?
The most obvious fault with the novel is the lack of a resolution; you have followed these people through the whole novel, yet you are let down at the end, it is as if the author couldn't think of a resolution. So we have this wishy washy conclusion, and are left wondering what happened to Aimee?
    A right riveting yarn
You never notice you don't have all the pieces of the jigsaw as the author skillfully feeds you them bit by bit with a few gasp out loud surprises along the way. Brilliant, could put it down

London, October 1968. As Beatles fans encamp outside Abbey Road Studios up the road, the Marylebone CID is as much an old boys' club as it ever was: comfortably sexist, racially prejudiced and crawling with corruption.
Detective Sergeant Cathal Breen is the pariah of the office, having just run out on a fellow officer held at knifepoint, when it's shaken up by the arrival of WPC Helen Tozer: awkward chatterbox, farmgirl, and the first woman to enter the murder unit - apart from the secretary.
When a young woman is found naked and strangled in well-to-do St John's Wood, her identity is a mystery. The neighbours offer nothing but xenophobic suspicions, witnesses are staying silent; only Tozer's savvy gives Breen a lead.
Following it, resourceless, deep into the rural backwaters, Breen sees one dead body lead to another - a trail of bloodshed taking them dangerously close to a killer with everything to lose...
    Members Reviews:
    Very enjoyable
I enjoyed this story much more than I thought I would. It really captured the feel of the sixties and I'm looking forward to hearing more of Breen and Helen
    The swinging 60's plus murder
A new author for me and a new narrator.
A cracking story set in London at the latter end of the sixties. You should be aware that
the book does contain some prejudices against working women and racial slurs but this didn't offend me at all. It seemed to be 'normal' for the setting.
Starts slowly and builds up in to a nice who dun it but it does go a little bit flat at the end. Throw in believable characters, a tiny bit about the Beatles/other musicians, bit about London and you really do have a half decent book though. The narration was spot on.
    Worth the money :)
Great story & beginning of series
This is a great start to a series that has at its centre, two funny, complicated characters that you immediately care about. The late 60's setting is evoked realistically, without going overboard with cliched descriptions and the usual tired tropes of flower power and Swinging London.
My only slight reservation is with the performance of the narrator. He does an admirable job with so many different characters and accents but his female voices, in particular, are very Monty Python and off putting at times. But don't let that put you off what is a great book and brilliant start to an ongoing series.
    Dated and a little disappointing
I think this is the first in the series which is why I thought I'd take the plunge. It was OK really - it is dated and has dreadful attitudes shown towards women and Africans , generally the story was OKish, but I didn't really like the rookie detective Tozer - I may try the next in the series after a bit of research as I do generally like William Shaw. I have just finished this book and have an 'underwhelmed and dissatisfied' feeling.
The Main character Breen, is OK and I think it may be worth a try to check out number 2. Cameron Stewart was fine with the narration - though his women's voices made me laugh on occasions.
the 60's are alive in this book!
The Beatles were a nice back drop for this book, all the themes of gender equality, face and the changing police force are covered in this book.Great first in the series.

    Members Reviews:
    Give this a pass
Opera fans, give this a pass. It's loaded with stereotypes, gives no real opera information, and is at least one-third filler. Mystery fans, it's not a very satisfying mystery. The detective, "Pryde of the Yard", is both rude and dense. The best parts of the book contain the two cleaning women, both of them a hoot, one of them the brightest character in the book. There are many excellent mysteries, some with opera as a background; this is not one of them.
