There were four of us down there for the first 32 months and 11 days of our captivity. And then, very suddenly and without warning, there were three. Even though the fourth person hadnt made any noise at all in several months, the room got very quiet when she was gone. For a long time after that, we sat in silence, in the dark, each of us wondering what this meant for her and for us, and which of us would be the next in the box.
Never get in the car. For years, best friends Sarah and Jennifer kept what they called the Never List: a list of actions to be avoided, for safetys sake, at all costs. But one night, they failed to follow their own rules.
Never go out alone after dark. Sarah has spent ten years trying to forget her ordeal. But now the FBI has news that forces her to confront her worst fears.
Never take risks. If she is to uncover the truth about what really happened to Jennifer, Sarah needs to work with the other women who shared her nightmare. But they wont be happy to hear from her. Because down there in the dark, Sarah wasnt just a victim.
    Never trust anyone.

    Thrilling story
Would you consider the audio edition of The Never List to be better than the print version?
I think both would be equal, Kristen Zieh's narration may not be to everyone's liking although I think her tone fit the personality of the main character.
What other book might you compare The Never List to, and why?
I don't think I've read any other book like it!
Did Kristen Zieh do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
I think there could have been more of an emphasis on each character's tone/voice so it would be easier to distinguish each character. Saying that, I never struggled to know who was speaking and the story was easy to follow so it didn't interrupt the book at all.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I didn't laugh or cry, although the situation the girls faced in the book filled me with sympathy and disgust.
    Any additional comments?
I was fascinated by the story line and left in suspense at to what would unfold and how the characters would end up.
    Meandering melodrama
I bought this book based on the Richard and Judy interview with the author. It promised to be an insightful account of prolonged abduction and torture and how the protagonist deals with the the aftermath.

    Love sports stories.
I enjoy sports oriented stories. The author, as in a previous book, gets really lengthy and "wordy" in some of his descriptions which takes away from the flow of the story. It was a good read, however, and I will probably continue to read this author.

`Too much death, too much loss, too much change in such a short period of time.'
Author Alisa Tangredi, a California writer and actress living in Southern California at present but originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, has gained a following for her books that seem to be influenced by her theatrical experiences. Like many of the characters in her novels she seems to commute between reality and fantasy with ease: she has been known to admit she has a love for madness in literature and theatre and likes to explore it in different ways in all her writing. In an interview she stated, `I think I have always had a desire to make sense out of what causes us to believe there is a monster under the bed or in the closet - to understand why some of us have an irrational need to sleep with the light on. Somehow that need turned into another need - to create that which makes us want to keep the light on. I think most of what I end up writing deals with some sort of extreme loss. Someone gets left behind. I think that is the ultimate monster for many of us, either because it has happened or because we worry about it. I take it a step further and make an actual monster responsible for that loss, whether real or psychological. Sometimes that monster turns out to be very much human, sometimes the paranormal being is actually the more sympathetic creature.'
Having had the pleasure of reading THE BROKEN ANGEL'S WINGS, this reader approached this novel, while not new (2012), with eagerness: Tangredi does not disappoint. While we have grown to understand that her way of weaving mental illness (or madness as the author prefers to phrase it in her writing) enhances the atmosphere of her story telling. And in UNDER THE LOOKING GLASS she offers us as fine a sense of how the disturbed disjointed mind under psychological and environmental stress functions. And the gift she has of digging into such territory without making it caustic or derogatory is quite amazing.
Her heroine is an insomniac of a serious degree.

    More!
This book is the best thing I've read since Stieg Larsson. It has complex characters inhabiting the fringes of society, an intriguing plot and is well written and translated. The narration is faultless. I did not want this to end and I sincerely hope that Audible will quickly publish the remaining books written by the outstanding Elsebeth Egholm.
I discovered that Ms Egholm was married to AJ Quinnell another author which Audible could do well to publish - ideally narrated by Sean Barrett!
    Superb!
The storyline was superb and enjoyed every minute of listening. I would like to listen to more by this author. Griping right until the end
A good addition to the Nordic Noir genre
What made the experience of listening to Three Dog Night the most enjoyable?
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and narration. The characters kept me engaged all then way through without turning into stereotypes. I will look forward to listening to her next offering.

    Stick with it
What made the experience of listening to The Fire Witness the most enjoyable?
The links between parts of the story were not always obvious but came together as it progressed.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
There are clear links between this and other books by the same author. I haven't read any others but will look out for them in future.
Have you listened to any of Saul Reichlins other performances? How does this one compare?
Not listened to any other performances.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I had to stop listening at times at the beginning of the book as the description of the crimes was too graphic to aid sleep!
    Any additional comments?
Stick with this one. I was going to send it back after the first 30 mins but it's a grower.
A must read in today's world.
By far the best book I have read (heard) in a very long time. Told with brutal humanity, with passion for life and love buried but never truly destroyed, amidst the terror of oppression. This story is so relevant, now, and of its time. The heart ache is palpable in those caught up in the story of family and life on two sides of modern war and terror. My heart broke listening to this story, and I will never read a newspaper article again with quite so detached and black and white a perspective.
    Fantastic
Love these books! There is so much going on and they are too addictive.

    Members Reviews:
    Gripping psychological thriller!
When nine-year-old friends Cecily, Amelia and Hilary became blood sisters in the railcar they had claimed as their very own cubby house, they swore they would remain sisters forever. The beginning of the school holidays were no different as they made their way to the railcar again, excited and happy about the upcoming games and mischief they would get into. But that day would change their lives forever â a young guy was inside and the brutality of the attack on Hilary while the other two girls cowered in the corner, unable to move, created a bond of guilt, laced with a desire for vengeance which never left them.
Twenty years later the three girls were still as close as ever, but Hilary was in and out of rehabilitation from drink and drugs, her only coping mechanism â Cecily was a lawyer, an assistant DA with commitment issues and Amelia had no trust of men, seeing a different man every night, never allowing herself to form a relationship. So when Amelia picked up yet another young guy at a nightclub one night, Cecily didnât think anything of it. Imagine her shock when she received a call from an exceedingly distraught Amelia in the middle of the night. She had recognised a tattoo from the pastâ.but the police wouldnât reopen the case, basically laughing at them.
Hiring a Private Investigator, Cecily determined they would find the evidence themselves â no way was he getting away with it again. But as she dug deeper and deeper into the past, she discovered horrifying secrets. She couldnât let it go, she wouldnât let it go; the danger escalated at a frightening speed and suddenly the worst happenedâ.
What an absolutely fantastic thriller from debut author Patricia Hale! I couldnât put it down, and when I had to I found myself thinking about it continually, talking about it and wondering what would happen next. The twists were amazing, I was in the grip of the plot from the very beginning. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this novel, and Iâll be watching out for more from this author.
    Loved this book

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Professor David Ullman is among the world's leading authorities on demonic literature. Not that he's a believer. He sees what he teaches as a branch of the imagination and nothing more. So when offered a luxury trip to Venice to consult on a 'phenomenon', he accepts, taking his 11-year-old daughter, Tess, with him.
Amidst the decadent splendour of the city, David makes his way to the address he's been asked to visit. What he witnesses in the tiny attic room shakes him to the core: a man restrained in a chair, clearly insane. But what David hears the man say is worse. The voice of his father, dead for 30 years, repeating the last words he ever spoke to his son. Words that have left scars - and a mystery - behind.
Terrified, David is determined to leave with Tess as quickly as possible. But he can't shake the feeling that something is following him. And then, before his eyes on the roof of their hotel, Tess disappears. But before she falls into the Grand Canal's waters, she utters a plea: Find me.
At once frightening and deeply moving, Andrew Pyper's page-turning thriller explores the lengths a father will go to find his daughter, and the darkness he is prepared to confront along the way.

With John Milton and Jeff Harding you can't lose.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Demonologist to be better than the print version?
Listen to the audio and then read the book. The words flow from the page as do the characters.
What other book might you compare The Demonologist to, and why?
Bad idea to compare just consider and judge this splendid work on its own.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Bad mistake to slice it into pieces as it has continuity and depth throughout. Andrew Pyper's use of language is from a classical palette. Milton never sounded so interesting or so significant to a thriller.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
Stick with the voice and the flow of pictures ...at times that can be hard ... Jeff Harding is a gift to this writing and visa versa. Don't allow your enthusiasm to waver or to dim your visions of characters. I'll wait a week or so and listen to it again.
The juxtaposing of characters, plot and Paradise Lost is inspired... next you'll have to order, as I have, the audiobook of Milton's great work to remind yourself of material you should have remembered from school days.
    Strange ending
Great story, very addictive and excellent read.
Such a shame about the ending, it stops without any explanation!
    Frustrated indeed.
    Good start
Good start but ended too soon. Needed to be longer.

    Critic Reviews:
Sheila Quigley has successfully moved away from her Seahills Estate series, yet in this the second of her new D.I. Mike Yorke thriller series, set on Holy Island, she brings her many readers the same degree of tension and thrills as she has in the past (shotsmag.co.uk)

    Fabulous read
Sheila can do no wrong. Brilliantly written, and keeps you engaged in the story from beginning to end.
Wish she would write a whole lot more.
Another fabulous book by Sheila Quigley
Sheila Quigley takes her readers to another dimension. You feel emotion, sadness, happiness, empathy. I cant explain in words what I truly think about this book other than Brilliant.....yes with a capital B.
    Nowhere Man
Great follow up to the first book in this series. A great read. Hope Sheila Quigley writes another book or two soon.
    Gritty Thriller.
Nowhere Man is the seventh novel from Sheila Quigley, the Grande Dame of BRIT GRIT, who kicked off a fast-paced thriller series last year with Thorn In My Side, which introduced us to to DI Mike Yorke.
Yorke, a decent Northern copper, had returned home to Holy Island, after living in London, for a bit of peace and quiet.
No luck there, though. Mike Yorke, along with his Aunt May and the psychic street-waif Smiler, were quickly embroiled in a bizarre murder case that involved flogged corpses, missing kids, a strange cult and a sinister group seemed to control the world.
With Nowhere Man, Quigley kicks off the story pretty much where Thorn In My Side ended, with Aunt May in a coma and the cult Leader out for revenge.
And the story continues at a breathless pace, giving us plenty of strange twists and turns along the way, to reach a climax that really does leave you wanting more.
In Nowhere Man we find out a lot more about Mike Yorke's and Smiler's past and Aunt May's amazing secret life.
Nowhere Man by Sheila Quigley is a high-octane page turner and is cracking fun. This series is very much 'high concept ', as they say in Hollywood, and does require a slight suspension of belief, but is also full of the down-to-earth characters, gritty realism and humour that we've come to expect from Sheila Quigley.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
For our latest Spider audiobook, we've jumped ahead in time to 1939 and one of the most dramatic and horrific exploits of Richard Wentworth's nightmarish career.
"Exploits" might not be the operative term for Claws of the Golden Dragon. It's actually one of the most intense ordeals the Master of Men ever endured in his decade-long career as a crime hunter. And that's saying a hell of a lot!
It begins with the arrival in New York of a Chinese supercriminal known as the Golden Dragon. His true identity shrouded in secrecy, the Dragon plans to loot America in order to fuel his planned conquest of Asia. Author Novell W. Page took his inspiration from Sax Rohmer's Dr. Fu Manchu , obviously. The editors at Popular Publications loved the sinister Oriental arch-villain. They published Dr. Yen Sin, The Mysterious Wu Fang, and frequently pitted their other heroes, like Operator 5 and G-8, against similar human scourges. The Golden Dragon is among the worst of these.
Claws of the Golden Dragon dates from the period when The Spider magazine was infused with Weird Menace elements, like the fare offered by companion magazines Terror Tales and Horror Stories. In this case, the Golden Dragon has cultivated a hothouse orchid that insinuates its suffocating roots and tendrils into the victim's still-beating heart! Forget Terror Tales, this is Weird Tales territory.
Page milks this new menace for all it's worth. Victims begin succumbing in the first chapter. And by the time Richard Wentworth and the valiant Nita van Sloan have struggled to defeat the Blood Orchids, they too fall victim to this most hideous doom!
Has Norvell Page gone too far this time? Can even the Spider survive this soul-paralyzing predicament? Or will he and his beloved be buried with their own personal funeral flowers feeding off of their stopped hearts?
Once again, Nick Santa Maria takes on the dual persona of Richard Wentworth and his arachnid alter-ego for this nail-biting audio rendition of the January, 1939 issue of The Spider. Michael C. Gwynne reads the thrilling Doc Turner story by Arthur Leo Zagat, "Death's Wedding March!"
