Amazing
Unbarred Innovation: A Pathway to Greatest Discoveries by Mayur Ramgir is a guide to an inventor who has an idea and is wondering what to do about it. The book opens with the author telling us the story of where post it notes came from. Basically, the inventor came up with a weak adhesive that could be easily removed but did not know what to do with it. He went to conferences, hosted seminars, spoke with colleagues, but not one showed much interest in an adhesive the could be peeled so easily. Eventually, after talking with many people, the idea came about to have it used for bookmarks. Thus, the post it note was invented. So, did the inventor come up with a product that did not have a problem to solve, or did he solve a problem that no one knew existed? The end lesson, some of the greatest discoveries are still out there, even of no one knows they are needed.
The writing takes us through a very in-depth process for coming up with solutions to problems or fueling the ideas needed for new inventions. Many of the ideas that the author highlights are things that actually make perfect sense. Work with the people around you, let your mind think about the problem and then get creative and try to come up with a solution. Drive yourself to find the answer, rather than giving up and letting the problem get away. I really enjoyed reading this. I can see anyone who has an idea or a solution to a problem getting a lot from this.
Plenty of ideas and strategies for every level of innovators
His book is full of ideas that anyone can take away and apply to their life. It is not just what can be done in your career, but also your education, your personal life, and more. These are the kinds off strategies and ideas that promote innovation and innovative thinking while avoiding the barriers that attempt to hold you back. I was interested in the section how traveling leads to innovation. The creativity increases when you are more aware of other cultures, traditions, and perspectives. This also true in the differences of people who are from the same country but from different regions. The innovation activities found throughout the book are good to activate ideas to a variety of learning and creative styles. That is one thing that is important to me as an educator and a parent: I can work to nurture myself to be more creative and innovative in my ideas, but I would be doing my children a disservice if I did not help nurture theirs.
