Oneness in Creation - Part 8
“The Invisible Hand”
With Rabbi Ari Sollish
Recorded live at The Torah Center ATL on Sunday, August 18, 2024
There was a time when prevailing Jewish thought was that most of what goes on in the world is driven by a confluence of choice and happenstance, and not by Divine intervention.
Then the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the Chassidic movement, came onto the scene. One of the primary teachings he shared was the notion of hashgacha pratis, highly specific and fully integrated Divine intervention. Nothing, he taught, happens by chance. Not even a leaf blowing in the wind. That leaf -- its every movement, its precise path down to the ground -- is directed by G-d, and is part of the master plan of history.
This teaching caught many by surprise. By and large it hadn't been mentioned in earlier generations. And while today, the idea of hashgacha pratis is mainstream, its true meaning is as stunning as ever -- and as transformative.
In this unforgettable session of Kabbalah Café we explore the Baal Shem Tov's most controversial idea and its radical ramifications.
