This week for Animation month, to offset the stress we’ve had and to watch something fun before next weeks pick Conor picked the 1998 Disney film Mulan. Based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, and was Disney’s 36th animated feature and the ninth animated film produced and released during the Disney Renaissance. Starring Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer and BD Wong the film takes place in China during the Han dynasty, where Fa Mulan, daughter of aged warrior Fa Zhou, impersonates a man to take her father’s place during a general conscription to counter a Hun invasion. Our second pick of animation month comes from Mark and its the 2008 Disney Pixar film Wall-e. What Don classifies as the beginning of Pixar making half movies, Wall-e was directed and co-written by Andrew Stanton and stars the voices of Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, John Ratzenberger, Kathy Najimy and Sigourney Weaver, with Fred Willard in the film’s (and Pixar’s) only prominent live-action role. It follows a solitary trash compactor robot on a future, uninhabitable, deserted Earth, left to clean up garbage. However, he is visited by a probe sent by the starship Axiom, a robot called EVE, with whom he falls in love and pursues across the galaxy. Come join this discussion using the links below!!

We know it’s now November 2nd but it’ll always be Spoopy Month in our hearts and Zach figured since we did a show for the crappy 2018 film then why not do one for the original and its true sequel 1978’s Halloween and 1981’s Halloween II. Directed and scored by John Carpenter and starring Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis the plot follows Michael Myers who was committed to a sanitarium for murdering his teenage sister on Halloween night when he was six years old. Fifteen years later, he escapes and returns to his hometown, where he stalks a female babysitter and her friends, while under pursuit by his psychiatrist then following survivor Laurie to the local hospital, while his psychiatrist Dr. Loomis continues his pursuit of him.

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky, for the fourth pick of Spoopy month we watched the 1991 film The Addams Family. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld in his screen directing debut the film stars Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams, Raul Julia as Gomez Addams and Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester. The film focuses on a bizarre, macabre, aristocratic family who reconnect with who they believe to be a long-lost relative, Gomez’s brother Fester Addams, who is actually the adopted son of a loan shark intending to swindle the Addams clan out of their vast wealth and fortune. This week we did something different as in we didn’t watch a movie but instead watched Don play the 2016 game Inside and we discussed what the “story” was about. Developed and published by Playdead in 2016 its about a boy, hunted and alone, who finds himself drawn into the center of a dark project. INSIDE is a dark, narrative-driven platformer combining intense action with challenging puzzles. It has been critically acclaimed for its moody art style, ambient soundtrack and unsettling atmosphere, how though we don’t really understand.

Happy Spoopy Month!! We had our horror adjacent month in September and now we’re in the thick of spooky time and Zach thought the recent 2020film Relic would be a good opener. Directed by Natalie Erika James (in her feature directorial debut), from a screenplay by James and Christian White it tells the tale of a daughter, mother and grandmother who are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family’s home. The film stars Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin and Bella Heathcote in some great performances in particular Nevin’s portrayal as the grandmother. Come join us in this discussion and stay tuned as we delve deeper into this horror filled month!!!

For the last film in horror adjacent month Conor picked the 2014 film Under the Skin. Directed by Jonathan Glazer and written by Glazer and Walter Campbell, the film is loosely based on the 2000 novel by Michel Faber. It stars Scarlett Johansson as an otherworldly woman who preys on men in Scotland.Developed Under for over a decade it was pared back from an elaborate, special effects-heavy concept to a sparse story focusing on an alien perspective of the human world. Most of the cast was chosen from applicants without previous acting experience, and many scenes were filmed with hidden cameras. Come join us for this discussion using the links below!!
