Success stories are cute—but let’s talk about the before. In this episode, we get real about the personal obstacles, toxic workplaces, and self-doubt we had to crawl through before we could even think about thriving. From being undervalued and overworked to unlearning the lies we believed about ourselves, we’re sharing what it really took to get here—and why success doesn’t mean you weren’t bruised along the way.

This episode of Bad Boss Detox honors the legacy of the Radium Girls—young women hired in the 1910s to paint luminous watch dials with radioactive paint, told it was safe, even healthy, to ingest. What followed was a devastating trail of illness, corporate denial, and one of the most heartbreaking workplace cover-ups in history.
We’ll explore how these women, many still in their teens, were gaslit by employers who prioritized profit over human life.
This isn’t just a history lesson. It’s a warning. Because the same patterns of denial, dismissal, and dehumanization still echo in toxic workplaces today.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Misogyny, sexual shaming, workplace abuse, radioactive poisoning, dental trauma, cancer, death

It’s their world, and you’re just working (and suffering) in it. This week on Bad Boss Detox, we’re tackling the narcissistic boss: the self-important, credit-stealing, blame-shifting leader who makes every workday feel like a hostage situation. From the boss who demands applause after every meeting to the one who ‘forgets’ your name unless they need something—this episode is a masterclass in spotting (and surviving) the corporate narcissist.
We'll note the twelve toxic personality traits of a narcissist, and how these may translate into workplace behaviors.
Then, we'll discuss the Grey Rock Method, and more strategies for surviving the toxic workplace while you look for a way out.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Narcissistic abuse, full episode.

Workplace horror stories are nothing new—history is filled with bosses whose greed, cruelty, and disregard for human life led to some of the darkest chapters in labor history. In this episode of Bad Boss Detox, we take a sobering look at four of the worst offenders, whose actions sparked protests, strikes, and, in some cases, tragic loss of life.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire—where locked doors and unsafe conditions caused an unbelievable tragedy. Then they tried it again.
Henry Clay Frick—the ruthless steel magnate who crushed strikes with deadly force.
George Pullman—the railroad tycoon who built a town to control his workers, then bled them dry.
The Match Girl s' Rebellion—where young women stood up to the factory that poisoned them for profit.
These aren’t just bad bosses; they’re reminders of why labor protections exist today. Join us as we examine their stories, the lives affected, and the workers who fought back against impossible odds.

Congratulations—you’ve just joined a podcast that understands the soul-crushing agony of bad bosses, toxic workplaces, and that one coworker who insists on replying-all every single time. In this inaugural episode of Bad Boss Detox, your hosts Ivy Hensley and Katie Boothe introduce themselves, spill some tea about their own workplace horror stories, and compare notes on surviving the 9-to-5 grind as a Gen Xer and a Millennial.
Were things really tougher back in the day, or did Gen X just have lower expectations? Are Millennials actually fragile, or did they just decide that suffering in silence isn’t a personality trait? We’re breaking it all down with sarcasm, humor, and just enough workplace trauma to keep it relatable.
So grab your resignation letter (or at least a strong drink) and get ready to detox from bad bosses, one episode at a time.
