Guilt involves intense, persistent feelings of remorse for perceived wrongdoings. Persistent feelings of guilt can lead to anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and damaged relationships. Extreme guilt can lead to feelings of shame, a sense of being deeply flawed.

Underneath trying to be a good, pleasing and responsible person is often guilt. Always seeking to keep the peace and giving into the needs of others can come from underlying feelings of guilt. Weak personal boundaries can come from underlying feelings of guilt. Over-giving can come from underlying feelings of guilt. Allowing others to control you and your reality can come from underlying feelings of guilt. Guilt can prevent you from making positive choices in order to move positively forward in their lives. Guilt can hide under other emotions and is not always immediately obvious especially if you have been living with this for a number of years.

Toxic guilt can lead to feelings of responsibility for things that are not your responsibility. Toxic guilt leads to feeling responsible for the happiness, wellbeing and success of others. Toxic guilt creates relationships and situations that feel confining and imprisoning. Toxic guilt can create a saviour or rescuer complex, the need to save or rescue others. Toxic guilt can create the story of a struggling and suffering hero. Toxic guilt can lead to burnout. Toxic guilt can lead to mental and physical ill-health.
