Transmusic Airwaves

This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#265) I'll mark the completion of my sixth year blending music, spoken word, comedy, and occasional dialogue into a program I refer to as 'unconventional freeform radio.' The show had it's original roots in college radio of the 1970's and continues to take it's inspiration from that era, as well as adding all the modern elements and music that influences me today. Each set will have a seamless 'flow' to it, regardless of the musical style from one song to the next.

During the second set today there's an homage to San Francisco (where I returned to radio in 2012) with music by THE BONZO DOG BAND, THE RESIDENTS, THE MAGNETIC FIELDS, FOXYGEN, and THE WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND.

I'll play songs from some of my favorite artists, (including GONG ,PERE UBU, MILES DAVIS, CAN, JOE STRUMMER, THE BEATLES, and XTC), several new releases (among them CHRIS BUTLER, DHANI HARRISON, and THE BREEDERS), WENDY CARLOS and PHILLIP GLASS will interpret the classics in their own way, and you'll hear acoustic stylings from BELA FLECK and PEG LEG SAM. There's also several surprises from the 'vault' as well.

Feel free to tune in when you can but don't miss it! And thanks for continuing to support this program over the years, I really appreciate it. Cheers!

Two great British folk legends, SANDY DENNY & NICK DRAKE, are played at the conclusion of the second set during this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #264). PHIL MANZANERA and the psych-folk band GANDALF also add songs to that mix, a mix that begins with NEW offerings from YO LA TENGO, DHANI HARRISON, and LAURIE ANDERSON with the KRONOS QUARTET.

Throughout the program, there's more NEW releases heard from DAVID BYRNE, MINISTRY, BILL FRISELL, OF MONTREAL, DOS SANTOS, JON HASSELL, and CHRIS BUTLER. If you love 'covers,' then get ready for RAMSEY LEWIS, LUNA, AMY RIGBY & WRECKLESS ERIC, and CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN with EUGENE CHADBOURNE to do their best interpretations. Add to this merriment, more 'vault' styling's from SILVER APPLES, CHROME, and HAWKWIND and soundtrack cuts from JOHANN JOHANNSSON and RAMIN DJAWADI.

Today's edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #263) features a large selection of NEW releases starting with DAVID BYRNE'S 'American Utopia' to begin the show, followed by the jazz band SPECIAL EFX, the supergroup GIZMODROME (featuring Stuart Copeland & Adrian Belew), then cuts from CHRIS BUTLER, JIMI HENDRIX (a previously unreleased instrumental), THE BREEDERS, and more from JASON FALKNER & R. STEVIE MOORE.

More NEW tracks are played from YO LA TENGO, JOHN HARDIN (TIN CAN LUMINARY), COLD SPECKS, BILL FRISELL, GOLDFRAPP, MONKS OF DOOM, DHANI HARRISON, ZOMBIE PICNIC, FATHER JOHN MISTY, CALEXICO, LUNA, LAURIE ANDERSON & KRONOS QUARTET, and a song from an advance copy of the JON HASSELL album 'Listening to Pictures.'

Don't fret folks, I've added plenty of 'vault' selections to keep the show interesting. There's early CARAVAN, THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA (from 'Birds of Fire'), MUSICA ORBIS, VANGELIS, LOUNGE LIZARDS, and THE TUBES. You'll get some international flavor from the German group TON STEINE SEHERBEN, Swedish folk band VASEN, and Ethiopian musician SAMUEL YIRGA. There's Jazz from JOEL HARRISON, ukulele plucking by JAKE SHIMABUKURO, and electronica from AUTECHRE.

An often overlooked version of JIM PEPPER'S 'Witchi-Tai-To' featuring Jim with DON CHERRY, COLIN WALCOTT, and JOHN SCOFIELD is the centerpiece of today's fifth set on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #262). Surrounding it, music from HP LOVECRAFT, COIL, and more new songs from LUNA, TUNE-YARDS, and LAURIE ANDERSON & KRONOS QUARTET.

Other listening enticements include MONTY PYTHON'S 'Cheese Shop' and two rather interesting versions of FRANK ZAPPA songs, one done by tuba-ist JAY ROSEN and the other from the OMNIBUS WIND ENSEMBLE, RON GEESIN'S banjo meanderings, a traditional bluegrass cover of 'Lazy John' by JAYME STONE and a not so traditional bluegrass cover of AC/DC'S 'Hells Bells' by HAYSEED DIXIE.

Add to all that more NEW acquisitions from DHANI HARRISON, JASON FALKNER & R. STEVIE MOORE, local fave CHRIS BUTLER'S 'Got It Together' release, Irish proggers ZOMBIE PICNIC and Chicago based MARBIN, and other older ditties from THE RESIDENTS, SOFT MACHINE, and NEGATIVLAND and it'll be quite a show indeed!

Hello Friends,
I've sent out notices each week telling you part of the contents of the forthcoming episode of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES for nearly six years now.

Perhaps music from DUKES OF STRATOSPHEAR, CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN, WENDY CARLOS' synthesizer rendition of Rossini's 'Thieving Magpie' (from 'A Clockwork Orange'), or the latest from MARBIN, MORGAN DELT, NEIL YOUNG, and THE BREEDERS will entice you to listen to my latest offering (Episode #261).

Or maybe you'll be interested in hearing some 'vault selections' from IVOR CUTLER (reciting 'Sleepy Old Snake'), JEFFERSON AIRPLANE ('Martha'), BE BOP DELUXE ('Life in the Air Age'), SILVER APPLES covering “Mustang Sally,' and BILL FRISELL doing the same with 'Rumble.' There's also selections from KEVIN AYERS, CHARLES MINGUS, HABIB KOITE, DAVID BOWIE, CARNEYBALL JOHNSON, PERE UBU, and PETE TOWNSEND'S Cleveland anthem, 'Sheraton Gibson' all programmed on this show. Below is the program's playlist. Thanks for listening!

FRESH AIR JANUARY 17, 1980 with Host Paul Ciminero

On this special Podcast today, you'll hear a two hour and fifty six minute segment from the groundbreaking Progressive/alternative college radio program, FRESH AIR, captured on cassette tape from,January 17, 1980.

I was a host on WKSU-FM's "Fresh Air," the late night student run radio program which ran during the heyday of late 70's,early 80's alternative college radio. Today's latest archival tape was restored and remastered by Dr. Woo and is one of now over 500 hours of tapes of this legendary program which originally aired from 1973 until 1981.

Fresh Air was riding a wave of popularity by the date of this tape, promoting concerts, interviewing, and doing 'live' recordings of many of the artists it played at the time. Various features such as the 'Artist of the Week,' Industrial Wasteland' interview program, Reel Live Music, and both the 'Domestic' and 'Import Album Premieres' helped to better educate the audience (and the DJ's as well) as to the styles of music we were playing back then.

On this night I had just replaced former DJ Jim Fisher as the permanent Thursday overnight host so I honored him by playing his weekly segment within his show that he dubbed the 'Whispering Yeast Hour.' It was a quirky set of spoken word, comedy, and somewhat odd ball musical selections so in keeping with the tradition I played Portsmouth Sinfonia, Firesign Theatre, The Residents, Lord Buckley, Lol Coxhill, and of course, The Bonzo Dog Band. The 'Artist of the Week' was Alice Coltrane, so you'll hear several compositions by her throughout the program.

The program begins with the evening's third set, and runs until my replacement DJ arrived at 3:00 am in the morning. Below is a listing of the song sets. Enjoy!

Question:

What do you get when you blend music from THE VENTURES and THE WAITRESSES with Disney melodies interpreted by BUSTER POINDEXTER and LOS LOBOS, 'Prog' from STEVE HACKETT, the jazz crooning of TOM WAITS, resonating strings of ATTACCA QUARTET, and a rock classic by JIMI HENDRIX ?

Answer:
Another great musical equation adding up to this weeks first set on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #260).
Along with those artists today you'll also hear songs by CAPTAIN BEEFHEART ('Buggy Boogie Boogie'), ROBERT WYATT ('Be Serious') and ANIMAL COLLECTIVE ('Father Time').
Add to that more strings from ALEXANDRE DESPLAT and LAURIE ANDERSON & KRONOS QUARTET as well as electronica from HELIOCENTRICS, LORD RUNNINGCLAM (with KEN NORDINE), and MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO, world beat from ISSA BAGAYOGO and DISSIDENTEN, and NEW album tracks from CALEXICO and THE BREEDERS.

I'll even gather a couple of songs from two '45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition' reissues; the ROXY MUSIC debut and THE VELVET UNDERGROUND'S 'White Light/White Heat.'

The latest edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #259) is here with plenty of cool music from the 'vault,' great jazz, progressive, folk, rock, and soundtracks all blended together for your enjoyment.

From the 'vault' there's the MOTHER'S OF INVENTION'S 'We're Only In It For the Money' (several cuts), and THE BEATLES ( 'Bungalow Bill' from The White Album) both celebrating their 50th anniversary. Other 'vault' goodies include choice cuts by the BONZO DOG BAND, JADE WARRIOR, TUXEDOMOON, and more from ROXY MUSIC'S remaster of their debut with another song from the BBC archives.

There's also jazz from YUSEF LATEEF and JEAN LUC PONTY, progressive music from CHROME and GONG, folk from HOT TUNA and CHRIS THILE, rock from LITTLE FEAT and TY SEGALL, and soundtracks by BERNARD HERMANN and ALEXANDRE DESPLAT.

Put some time aside and give this weeks show a listen!

This week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #258) I'll start the program with 'Re-make Re-model' from ROXY MUSIC'S 45th Anniversary remaster of their debut album from a NEW bonus disc recorded on the BBC's 'John Peel' show in April 1972. During that same set you'll hear THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION'S 'Brown Shoes Don't Make It' (remastered as well), R. STEVIE MOORE, FRED FRITH, THE OUTCASTS 'I'm In Pittsburgh (and it's Raining),' and two more NEW cuts from TY SEGALL and SPROINGG.

Later on I'll add CAPTAIN BEYOND, SYD BARRETT, LOTHAR & THE HAND PEOPLE, NICK DRAKE, and an outtake from the BANTON/JACKSON/EVANS album, The Long Hello.'

Excited yet? I'll also play several cha cha's from DIZZY GILLESPIE, ESQUIVEL, BRAVE COMBO, and SENOR COCONUT (the later interpreting Jean Michel Jarre's 'Oxygene II'). Plus there's international melodies from DILON DJINDI and VASANT RAI, Indie Rock from SUPER FURRY ANIMALS and THE EARLIES, and soundtracks by NEIL YOUNG ('Where The Buffalo Roam') and ALEXANDRE DESPLAT ('The Shape of Water').

Today I'm celebrating a milestone as I've reached my 300th broadcast with this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #257) since returning to radio in 2012. The concept and commitment to bringing great 'freeform' radio programming to friends, fans, and anyone willing to listen continues to evolve from those days back in the late 1960's when I first heard FM underground radio, to my own work as a college DJ doing 'progressive' radio in the 70's, and now coming full circle to where I sit today, with a lifetime worth of music to choose from.

Here's some of the artists you'll hear on today's show. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (JOE BYRD), TOMITA, GONG, PERE UBU, DON CHERRY, THE BEATLES, ENNIO MORRICONE, DEVO, MOONDOG, ENO/CALE, TOM WAITS, THE ROLLING STONES, LOU HARRISON, BE BOP DELUXE, and HECTOR ZAZOU. New releases include more music from SPARKS, LAURIE ANDERSON & KRONOS QUARTET, SPROINGG, and TUNE-YARDS. There are 'covers' by played by FATBOY SLIM (The Who), NEIL MERRYWEATHER (The Byrds), and THE BAD PLUS (Nirvana) and plenty of other surprises along the way.
