Ornette Coleman is remembered today during a show that includes some songs about the beach and others about space. It’s another smorgasbord of free form radio packed with a tasty variety of musical selections on this week’s program.

Music from Kevin Ayers, Dilon Djindi, and Gorillaz add to the lively “beach” theme while XTC, The Doors, Thurston Moore, and Camper Van Beethoven bring the subject of “space” to life.

I’ll continue the countdown to Terry Riley’s 80th birthday celebration with a composition of his done by the Kronos Quartet, and add several pieces of music with an international flair from the “Rough Guide to the music's of” the Sahara, Central Asia, and Australia. I'll also play songs from a multitude of artists that include Joni Mitchell, The Golden Palominos, P.D.Q. Bach, Snakefinger, and the obscure psychedelic styling’s of The Plastic Cloud.

On today’s program it’s time once again for another special feature “Character Study.” A “Character Study” is a two hour in depth look at individuals and groups that have had a significant impact on contemporary music. I’ve chosen the bands HENRY COW, SLAPP HAPPY, the spin off band THE ART BEARS, and solo works from their individual members as the latest subject matter.

HENRY COW was formed by university students Fred Frith and Tim Hodgkinson in 1968 and began recording in the early 1970’s. SLAPP HAPPY originated in Germany in 1972 and was comprised of members Anthony Moore, Dagmar Krause, and Peter Blegvad. Both bands merged for a time and created some of the most compelling music for the then newly launched Virgin Records label.

This program will look at both bands individually and together, the spin off band The Art Bears, (which emerged after the break up of those bands) plus an extensive look at solo material from Fred Frith, John Greaves, Dagmar Krause, Anthony Moore, Peter Blegvad, and other members over the past four decades. Also featured will be several “live” recordings from both Henry Cow and The Art Bears.

During the lead up to this special in the first hour you’ll hear plenty of new releases and a few previously featured artists.

This week marks the 45th anniversary of what was one of the darkest days in modern American history as four students were killed and nine others wounded by Ohio National Guard troops at Kent State University while protesting the escalation of the Vietnam war into Cambodia on May 4, 1970.

On today’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#115) I’ll play various Kent, Akron, and Cleveland bands who played locally and were influenced by those events. Music from Devo, The James Gang, Tiny Alice, and Chi-Pig will be mixed throughout the first hour of the show with songs of a political nature.

Also included will be the airing of Chris Butler’s (The Waitresses, Tin Huey, and currently Half Cleveland) autobiographical song, “Beggar’s Bullet’s.” Chris was a student attending Kent at the time and a close friend of slain student Jeffrey Miller.

During the rest of the program other Northern Ohio artists will be blended into today’s remaining sets. They include Kent, Ohio’s The Numbers Band, Akron’s Bizarros and Human Switchboard, and Ralph and Patrick Carney; and Cleveland’s Pere Ubu. The final set returns with a political theme and finishes with The Pretender’s “Revolution.”

DAEVID ALLEN – JANUARY 13, 1938 to MARCH 13, 2015


Please join me today on this special edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#109) over SFCR, San Francisco Community Radio, KUSF-in-Exile in celebrating the life of DAEVID ALLEN.

As founding member of the band GONG and the band The Soft Machine, Daevid remained at the forefront of the Psychedelic and Progressive Rock movements for over four decades, bringing his own brand of playful mysticism to thousands of loyal fans.

Today you’ll hear music from his work in GONG including an assortment of rare “live” recordings, plus selections from his solo work, and his collaborations with Gilli Smyth, Harry Williamson, Daevid Allen’s University of Errors, and New York Gong. There’s even a “tall tale” woven by Daevid based on a visit from his parents while living in Majorca.

The musical elements will be interwoven with excerpts from interviews conducted by myself and Jeff Wootton in 1979 and 1980 that covered topics from the creation of the Gong mythology and the development of his “glissando” guitar technique to his views on drugs and creativity, his various musical influences, and his thoughts on religion; all in his own words.

Join me in celebrating the life of this extraordinary being who brought so much joy to so many.

It’s time once again for a special “Character Study” on today's edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES. A “Character Study” is a look at an artist or group that’s had a significant impact on contemporary music and today I’ve chosen to look at the life and career of ROBERT WYATT.

Wyatt was the co-founder of the legendary Canterbury band The Soft Machine and as an artist his prolific output and influence has encompassed the past half century.

Today I’ll look at his early beginning in bands The Wilde Flowers, Soft Machine, and Matching Mole; his numerous solo albums, and his work as an “in demand” sideman for many legendary musical projects.

There will be several rare, live, and in some cases surprising cuts played during this feature which airs in the final two hours of today’s program. During the first hour today I’ll look back at all the artists I’ve featured in past “Character Studies.”

This week’s TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#75) marks the return of my bi-monthly special feature “Character Study,” an in depth look at bands/individuals that have had a significant influence on contemporary music.

On today’s edition a look at “CARAVAN and Other Tales From Canterbury,” an exploration into the origin and history of one of the Canterbury Scene’s musical anchor’s, Caravan and the many artists that emerged from under it’s wings.

Music spanning Caravan’s decades of work will be heard beginning with the groups origin in the legendary band The Wilde Flowers and the subsequent creation of other bands by it’s members. In addition to hearing music from Caravan, other Canterbury stalwarts to be played include Delivery, Matching Mole, Hatfield and the North, National Health, and Camel. Solo material from Richard Sinclair, John G. Perry, and Geoffrey Richardson will be heard as well.

This feature will air during the second and third hour of today’s show. During the first hour cuts from the latest albums from Eno & Hyde (“High Life”), Damon Albarn, Camper Van Beethoven, and Ray LaMontagne along with other music will be played.

“Warning, Warning...Danger Will Robinson” “Ohhh the pain...the Pain!” Those phrases have been engrained into every baby boomers psyche since the TV sci-fi series “Lost in Space” first aired in 1965.

On today’s edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#71) I’ll take bits of that show’s dialogue and surround it with the appropriate “space” songs from such artists as Hawkwind, Devo, Aimee Mann, Wooden Shjips, Captain Beyond, Ken Nordine, David Bowie, and several others in today’s final hour. Zero the Hero and Captain Capricorn are just two of the alter egos of legendary guitarist DAEVID ALLEN’S persona as founding member of the British psychedelic band GONG and as principle protagonist in it’s other worldly mythology.
