We wrap up Pride Month 2018 with the deservedly beloved Bound. Even as queer storytellers gain more opportunities and indie works become more widely available, films like Bound are still a relative rarity: a genre film (in this case, neo-noir) that happens to have a queer relationship at the heart of it rather than being a film about The Gay Experience. With a happy ending and everything.

Also it's like, really good. Super fucking good. Maybe one of the Wachowski Sisters' best, despite being their debut. With sex scenes they hired an actual lesbian to choreograph and everything! Apparently nobody ever thought of that before.

The Gay 90s gave us plenty of queer film, but none so uniquely beloved as this pastel pink satire-cum-romcom. While pretty damn important and frequently delightful (not to mention still damn rare), the writing is starting to show its age. But hey, at least the screenwriter went on to work on that powerhouse of magnificent writing: Smallville.

Movies about The Gay Experience are always quick to become time capsules, and while there's still a lot to love here, it's worth taking a magnifying glass to what happens when your satire doesn't have goals beyond a nebulous "piss some people off on Both Sides."

Pride Month rolls on with a movie about a good ol' platonic friendship, the kind where you kiss each other and run away from an abusive spouse and raise a child together. Extremely heterosexually, except for the source material that was written by a lesbian.

Fried Green Tomatoes is a big name in the "weepy" boom of the 80s and 90s, big prestigious family/generational dramas with star-studded female casts where somebody is bound to die of a fatal disease before the credits roll. So while this movie does technically have a dead lesbian, it's not a killer case of the gays that gets her.

Meanwhile, poor Kathy Bates is trapped in the 90s feminism subplot from hell. Pray for her.

The Children's Hour is a particularly accomplished film: not only does its gay lead kill herself out of terrible guilt for existing, it also has time to be soulsuckingly dull and produce the single most wooden performance of Audrey Hepburn's career! This was nominated for Oscars, people.

Between Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, Danny Boyle made a movie for himself...and possibly no one else. The result is a messy, sometimes charming, bafflingly heterosexual romcom about a disgruntled office worker and a borderline-sociopathic rich girl forced together by meddling heavenly hands.

In the late 90s, Kevin Murphy (no, the other one; though we were mistaken in the recording)debuted a musical version of the famous 1930s scare film on the LA theatre scene. This film is the epic, multi-generational tale of uncovering how exactly to punch a murderer in the dick. And in the end, the day is saved by wig-snatching.

Executioners from Shaolin is a Shaw Brothers film, the most prolific and influential studio in Chinese cinema. We tease, but this is a time to pay tribute to a troupe of incredibly skilled actors and athletes. The stunts they pull of in this film, including dragging a man around by the foot with thigh muscle alone and putting out a FLAMING METAL STATUE WITH YOUR HANDS, are beyond awesome.

Terry Pratchett is one of the most influential and fondly remembered fantasy authors in the English language, with good reason. That's why we set out to read his worst book, to prove that sometimes really good authors flower from really terrible novels.

Or, there is a very good reason why the first piece of advice Discworld fans give is "don't start with the first book."
