  • The Thief and the Cobbler - Why Auteurs Are Terrible
This is the tragedy of a group of animators who poured their hearts into thousands of drawings that never made it to the screen, because a genuinely talented but overly entitled asshole with too much money and too many chances was way more interested in self-indulgently creating a Perfect Vision (which he didn't even have a clear vision of).
Thief and the Cobbler has a famously fucked up production history, consuming hundreds of lives and millions of dollars over almost half a century. The result? An unfinished work cut heroically preserved by dedicated fans, that's part truly gorgeous and part literally physically painful to watch.
CONTENT WARNING for discussion of racism, sexism, and sexual assault

  • Audition - Dude Gets What's Coming to Him
Audition is the story of a Nice Guy who just wants to meet a nice young woman by leveraging his position as a producer to ask strangers intimate questions under false pretenses. For some reason, this ends with bad things happening to him (and it's awesome).
Gather round for Shiina Eihi's magnetic, amazing performance and the bone-deep satisfaction of watching this asshole get what's coming to him. Also some really great surrealism. Yes, it's disturbing, but not for the reason Eli Roth seems to think it is.

  • Tusk - Is Man Truly a Walrus at Heart (No)
One time Kevin Smith got super stoned, read a fake personal ad, and pitched a walrus horror movie. With some really good leads. And effects. And only like, 20 minutes that are completely unwatchable. Round these parts we're a sucker for quality body horror.
This film raises some very important questions, like: does Kevin Smith qualify for auteur theory? when did Shawn learn to do a pretty good Dr. Doofenshmirtz impression? Why is Johnny Depp still getting work?

  • Golden Boy - Beautifully Animated Toilet Worship
Happy Valentine's Day! As is tradition, we're ringing in the occasion with a garbage anime about love. Last year's ended with multiple homicides, but this year we went with something gentler: fetish porn. Fetish porn with a really big budget.
Witness Golden Boy, the anime you might've seen praised on Tumblr for what looks, in isolation, like a really nice swimming sequence. Or maybe you know it for its dub, a triumphant achievement of human willpower starring a man who didn't do much acting after the 90s and knows exactly what kind of show he's working on. Most shocking of all, it's an ecchi series that almost entirely focuses on women of legal age.
Yes, Golden Boy is the kind of treasure this show was invented for. Soak it in; but like, check what you're soaking in first.

  • Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - A Smarter Cabin in the Woods
How do you make a meta slasher movie in the mid-2000s without it being tired and late to the party? Well, making it a stealthy satire of true crime fandom is a pretty good starting place.
Or: What if Cabin in the Woods had been made several years earlier by people who liked the horror genre a whole lot rather than being obviously, openly contemptuous of it?
It's a pretty great hidden gem...but the screenwriters need to stop trying to make "Survivor Girl" happen. We've had a word for that for 30 years.

  • Phantom of the Paradise - Listeners Chose Us Pain
We asked readers to pick us a movie, and the results were...extremely 70s.
It's cool: Vrai is a big Phantom of the Opera nerd, and Dorothy is totally primed to watch the older version of The Crow (that there's not much reason to watch, because now The Crow exists). And we can all come together and marvel at the glory of BEEF, the most magical and meatheadiest gay rocker.

  • Single White Female - Harold, They're Murder Lesbians
We take you to the early 90s. While Philadelphia was teaching straight America that The Gays Are People Too, Single White Female made sure to tell them that lesbians are definitely coming to obsessively stalk and then murder you with their scary mental illness. But, y'know, you get to see some boobs first.
It's super not a good film, y'all. Take a good whiff of that pyscho lesbian trope; then hold your nose and follow us in. The movie finally convinced us that its central antagonist was an awful person--but way, way after it thought it had. The first two thirds are the sad tale of a woman trying to desperately hold onto a rent-controlled apartment in Manhattan.
(Vrai had some audio issues on this episode--don't worry, it'll be worked out by next time.)

  • Drunk Book Club: The Da Vinci Code
Merry Christmas and happy holidays, listeners! We rang in the season the only way we knew how: with a book banned by the Catholic Church. Turned out they weren't happy with the whole "Jesus got his dick out one time" argument.
We're just unhappy because it's agonizing.
Oh, and it was a major reflection of the post-9/11 Bush years and the stratifying power fantasies inherit in secret societies or whatever.

  • Freeway - Red Riding Hood vs the Big Bad Pedophile
Behold: a movie about a teen girl who's a survivor of sexual abuse, written by a straight man...that doesn't suck. Actually, it's kind of good at telling a power fantasy about a young woman below the poverty line raging against upper class straight male privilege.
