  • Brotherhood of the Wolf - Live Action French Anime
The Silent Hill director made a movie about famous cryptid the Beast of Gevaudan. It is somehow not a werewolf movie, because it is too busy kind of being Jaws with a wolf. It does feature very thoughtful and sensitive casting (hint: this is sarcasm). Also, we would like to extend our apologies to our French listeners in advance.

  • The Hunger - The Most Famous Lesbian Vampire Movie (Somehow)
We can't prove that Anne Rice watched this movie about vampire being from Egypt, Actually, but we have a thought or two. It's okay, this movie ripped off Interview with the Vampire first.
Anyway, this is one of those movies that's too good to say the word "vampire," and also makes you watch David Bowie age rapidly. It would all be very sad if not for the things that are so, so bad. Who knows how to write queer women better than a straight man?
    4:00 Background Info

  • Interview with the Vampire - Our Favorite Trashpires
Hey, you know how vampires are all sad and broody now? It's because of this story. But also they were still doing murders and being scary while having existential crises. Anyway, this is the simple story of a man and his bad, bad marriage to Tom Cruise. Meanwhile, one of western cinema's best child performances breaks out.
Also, we really love Louis and loathe Brad Pitt. Also additionally, Antonio Banderas was good. Come at me.
CONTENT WARNING for....Anne Rice stuff. Discussion of suicide, depression, child and spousal abuse.
Now with (very broadly sketched) show notes!
4:00 Neil Jordan loves telling queer stories (poorly)

  • Fright Night - The Ultimate Horror: Gays in Suburbia
I know we like saying that Interview with the Vampire is the gayest vampire movie. But actually, it's this one. Also, if you remove the vampire scenes it becomes a movie about a teenage boy plotting a hate crime against his gay neighbors.
But I guess technically it's about Rear Window, vampire style, as said teen boy tries to get someone to believe him about the supernatural being next door. Half the production crew was queer. It shows a little bit. And some of them went on to some FASCINATING careers. For a given value thereof.
Also there was a remake. We guess.
Anyway, happy October! It's time to talk about the undead.

  • Drunk Book Club: My Sweet Audrina
Audrina lives in the shadow of her dead older sister, who was not only perfect in every way but had the exact same name. She's definitely a real, different person, which is why Audrina's dad is constantly pushing her to recover her sister's memories. Welcome to VC Andrews Land, where the protagonists are not like other girls, the sentences are purple, and all of the men are rapists.
This one is a doozy for CONTENT WARNINGS: child abuse, sexual abuse, sexual assault, misogyny, ableism, and spousal abuse. All of which this book handles very, very badly.

  • The Bad Seed - The First Evil Child Movie
You know how sometimes children are inherently evil because genetics and also Freud said so? The only thing a good mother can do is cover up her child's crimes and then attempt a dramatic murder-suicide. But only after many, many monologues against a weird Greek pillar that doesn't fit in with the rest of the decor.
The Bad Seed is a 1956 movie that directly adapts the 1954 play, with a few....interesting changes based on the demands of the Hays Code (and by interesting I mean AMAZING). You can watch the whole thing for free in the public domain, and we'd recommend it.
Also featuring a guest appearance by Dorothy's enduring flame for Starsky & Hutch.

  • What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? - Diva Fight
Jane Hudson, former child star, resents her now wheelchair-bound sister for being a more successful movie star as an adult. Their rocky relationship has been getting worse, and Jane's passive-aggressive torments have turned overt in their abuse. In fact, she's starting to think she'd be better off without her sister...
Did I mention that the two lead actors were huge Golden Age Hollywood stars, and they HATED each other? It shows.
Or: Hey, Psycho sure was successful, huh?
Featuring a guest spot by Starsky & Hutch and the Hays Code.

  • Newsies - Needs More Child Death
This movie raises many questions: why was baby Christian Bale, a Good Actor and Bad Dancer, cast in a singing and dancing show? Why did Disney think a strike spearheaded by homeless children was perfect for a squeaky clean musical? How exactly does collective action work, anyway?
We spend some time with the real-life history that inspired Newsies--which is a heck of a lot more inspiring than the movie itself turned out to be. There are a lot of interesting things adjacent to this movie but not actually in it, actually. But baby Christian Bale sure does want to be a cowboy.

  • The Atomic Cafe - This is How We're Going to Die
In 1982, the Rafferty brothers put together a documentary about how America's combination of powerful weaponry, careless leaders, propaganda, and willful ignorance would lead us to nuclear annihilation. It somehow feels even more relevant in 2017 than it did during the Cold War.
The film is cut together using only test footage, advertisements, propaganda, and other footage from the era. It ranges from bleakly funny (if you like Fallout, this is for you), to unspeakably horrific. Content warning for war crimes and animal cruelty.
If you think you can stomach the disturbing content, it's an absolute must-watch.

  • The Five Obstructions - Lars von Trier Tries Optimism
    It doesn't work.
Lars von Trier -- agent provocateur if you're generous, director with a hard-on for depicting female suffering and trolling film festivals if you're Vrai -- took a strange turn in 2003, with the only documentary of his career. Here we find von Trier trying to help a director who inspired him get over his artist's block.
Yes, Lars "Bjork spit in his face every day of shooting" von Trier tried to help someone.
    The results are decidedly mixed.
