The Vegas of England…York is hands down one of the biggest party cities in England. And it came as a surprise to Jamin and Hilarie, as they made a whistle stop on their way from Stratford-Upon-Avon to Edinburg. Even during the day, the couple found themselves walking down the lively streets among hen and stag parties in full swing. But Jamin and Hilarie were quickly distracted by the Chocolate Festival.

The medieval history of the city was a stark contrast to the young party scene. Within the stone city walls, visitors are surrounded by historic spaces like York Minster, The Shambles, and Guy Fawkes Inn

Did you know that you have access to private property across the English countryside? Everyone does! Public footpaths give hikers access through beautiful pastures and small villages.

Are you a theater fanatic? Hilarie is! (Go figure...) But even if you’re not, you’ll still love the history and charm behind Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon.

This small English city has protected and cultivated the history of Shakespeare, who is widely believed to be the greatest writer in the English-speaking world. Not only did he write plays for the stage, like "Romeo & Juliet," he also coined many of the terms we still use today – things like, “It’s all Greek to me!” Walk with Jamin and Hilarie through the streets of Stratford-Upon-Avon, where this hopeless romantic was born, where he fell in love with his wife (Anne Hathaway), and where he was ultimately laid to rest. Theater productions like "War of the Roses" are performed regularly at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre here. While staying in the city, Jamin and Hilarie also took day trips to Warwick Castle and The Cotswolds.

Just outside of London, there’s a city that breeds the world’s best authors and most intelligent individuals: Oxford. So Jamin and Hilarie decided to hop off the train for a quick whistle stop, with plans to bottle up some of the brainpower from Oxford University.

Come with them as they uncover the natural habitat of writers like J.R.R. Tolkien (author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings), C.S. Lewis (author of The Screwtape Letters and A Grief Observed), Lewis Carroll (author of Alice in Wonderland) and more. Walking the streets of Oxford, you’ll find places like The Eagle and Child (nicknamed The Bird and Baby), a pub where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien met regularly. It’s clear that thoughtful thinking is welcome and fairytales have made their home here.

Bath, England: The People Who Saved Their Pub

Would your community come together to save a local business? It happened near Bath, England and it saved a 400 year-old pub. The Packhorse pub opened in the 1600s but had to shut its doors in 2012. The community wouldn’t have it. They launched a “Save the Packhorse” campaign that ultimately restored and reopened the pub on its 400th anniversary. Tune in to this episode of Travel FOMO to hear about Jamin and Hilarie’s hike to South Stoke, where this unique pub is thriving.

And despite the wet spring weather, the couple spent countless hours wandering the streets of Bath, where they visited the Roman Baths museum, attended Palm Sunday service at Bath Abbey, hit up a thrift store, and find the tiny Gin Distillery & Herbal Apothecary.

London’s calling, so Jamin and Hilarie answered it. After saving money, selling everything, losing 40 pounds (each) and quitting their jobs, the couple officially kicked off their Gap Year journey on the streets of England’s most popular destination. With some COVID-19 restrictions still in place, they hopped an international plane with only a backpack and a three-month Eurail pass. In this audio episode, you’ll hear the highlights in this episode, as they return to their favorite places: Borough Market, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Hyde Park, Kensington Palace and Westminster Abbey. They also made their way to some new-to-them places: St. Paul’s Cathedral, Harrod’s, the Princess Diana Memorial and afternoon tea on a red double-decker bus.
