Season 7 – Gap Year: Mediterranean Europe

Episode 1

Border cities are the best! San Sebastian-Donista sits on the border of northern Spain and southwest France, an area known as Basque country. As such, it’s home to its own language (Basque), foods (like pintxos), culture and weather.

Like many Spanish cities, San Sebastian is sunny during the day and lively at night. And like most French architecture, the bridges and buildings are extravagant and regal. With two gorgeous beaches, pedestrians enjoy striking views that unobstructed by hotels and restaurants. Not to mention, there’s a historic castle on a hill (Castillo de la Mota) and a palace (Miramar Palace).

It’s hard to believe, but this entire city was raided and burned to the ground in the 1800s, following a deadly and dramatic war attack that killed half of the residents. But instead of starting over in a new place, the remaining citizens (mostly women) rebuilt the city one brick at a time.

Are you intimidated by the idea of a wine tour in France? Bordeaux may be home to some of the world’s finest wines, but it’s not too elite for the average traveler to enjoy.

In this episode, Jamin and Hilarie take their gap year travels to Bordeaux, where they learn all about Bordeaux wines in the tiny UNESCO World Heritage village of Saint Emilion. Tune in to hear about their wine train tour, including a stop at Chateau Rochebelle. They also tour the huge underground wine cellars of a small winery called Château Villemaurine. Back in Bordeaux, they were pleasantly surprised by the incredible eats and lively streets – including the longest pedestrian street in Europe.

Unbeknownst to them, Jamin and Hilarie scheduled themselves to be in Zermatt, Switzerland right in the middle of the village’s shoulder season. Restaurants? Closed. Snow skiing? Not ideal. Hiking? Limited.

Fortunately, there was still plenty to do. They traded in the planned Five Lakes Hike for a hike to Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge. And instead of snowskiing into Italy, they relaxed in their AirBnB and enjoyed an epic view of the Matterhorn mountain.

Lyon is home to more than 20 Michelin star restaurants and holds the title of “The Gastronomic Capital of the World.” While there, Jamin and Hilarie taste Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse and dine at La Commune, a creative culinary incubator.

Of course, there’s more to this city than food. For instance, the couple meets countless friendly people throughout their time in Lyon. They also discover the remains of the first Christian church in France, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourivère, Roman theater ruins, secret passages called Traboules, Parc De La Tête d’Or and a free city zoo.

With only 750 official residents, the Austrian town of Hallstatt is reeling from the 10,000 visitors it receives each day. The beloved lakeside town resides in the Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut region, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for being the inspiration for the village in the animated Frozen Disney movie, this tiny village struggles to thrive in an overbearing world of tourism. It’s so popular, in fact, that a replica was created in China.

Join Jamin and Hilarie as they experience breathtaking moments in upper Austria, including their overnight stays at Hotel Haus Am See in Obertraun. Only a short cable car ride away, visitors can also enjoy hiking, paragliding and incredible mountain top views from the nearby Dachstein Krippenstein.
