  • Mini-sode 2
In this second mini-sode I'll attempt to read from a Spanish textbook I photocopied. I'm pretty sure it's about Guatemala ;) As you listen to this I am continuing to explore Xela study at the Utatlan Spanish School. Some of you may remember an earlier episode from a while back with Maeve McGuinness. She also studied at Utatlan, and convinced me that travel is always worthwhile. I'll tell you more about it and my host family in the next episode, the first in what I hope will be an extended series on Guatemala. Wish me luck!

  • Mini-sode 1
As you listen to this mini-sode I'm finishing my first week of study at the Utatlan Spanish School in Quetzaltenango (Xela). You can hear this episode with Maeve McGuinness to hear what she thought about her experience there. Ever since that conversation I'd been thinking about going to find out for myself.

While I was searching for reading material on Guatemala at the Pagosa Springs library I ran across the book Far and Away by Andrew Solomon. He's a prolific writer who has traveled all throughout the world. I'll share one of the blurbs from the introduction to that book as I begin to immerse myself in a new culture. Stay tuned...

  • Sharon Glassman, Blame it on Hoboken
Sharon Glassman is a podcasting novelist. She arranged her book Blame it on Hoboken into episodes that have been performed live, complete with wine pairings, for audiences in a variety of venues. When she moved to Boulder she began writing songs for each episode and started The Lazy Persons Book Club, a podcast and performance series, as a new way for audiences to experience the novel.

I give him the manuscript. He gives me two pieces of paper. One says, your apartment lease is up for renewal in two months. The other one says, your office lease is up for renewal in two months. I looked at my dog and said, 'Life is short. America is big. It's time to move'.

In this first-ever live episode we also discussed Sharon's move to Boulder, introverts, and some of the themes running throughout this podcast since the first episode in January 2016.

For those in the Boulder area, be sure to check Sharon's website for upcoming live performances of the Lazy Persons Book Club as well as her band the Jamesons Duo, "classic and original Americana with a sunny bluegrass twist".

Special thanks to Logans Espresso Cafe in Boulder, Colorado for letting use one of their tables as a podcast studio!
