  • Interview: Jeff Abbott

Jeff Abbott is an independent journalist and photographer covering social movements and human rights in Mexico and Central America. His work has been featured in Truthout, The Progressive, Upsidedown World and many others. In this interview we talk about Honduran resistance to the Juan Orlando Hernandez regime, Berta Caceres and environmental activism, Guatemala's 36-year war, and more.
So when the attack began, people were concerned. One of my friends was like, c'mon Jeff. We gotta go, we gotta go. And my thought was, document, document, document, document.
    ***

There is no armed resistance. The guerillas laid down their arms and entered into the Peace Accords. But the war transformed into another counter-insurgency. Today you see the same issues arising in a different context. The question of land. The history of Guatemala is the struggle over land.

  • Valeria Ayerdi, Anabella Acevedo, Festival Todas Contra la Violencia
This episode was produced in solidarity with the women organizing against violence in Central America. In June, Cat Walker (Witness for Peace) posted this report from Honduras from which we learn some alarming statistics: "every 30 minutes a woman is sexually assaulted; every 16 hours a woman is killed; less than 4 percent of femicide cases result in convictions; most sex crimes are not even investigated." Fast forward to November. In Quetaltenango, Guatemala the feminist collective Todas Contra La Violencia just hosted their second annual festival at Casa Noj in their continuing efforts to end gender violence.

We hold energy in our bodies.  The life that we have can really connect to the lives of others.  I think this is the beauty of this festival
—Valeria Ayerdi, Todas Contra La Violencia

  • Hadiya Sewer | Post-Irma/Maria U.S. Territories

Disaster Capitalism in the U.S. Territories

Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were hit hard by hurricanes Irma and Maria. The two category five storms arrived within two weeks of each other, complicating relief efforts. To make matters even worse, the current U.S. president seems to lack even the most basic knowledge of these Caribbean islands, much less the efficiency and effectiveness required to rebuild infrastructure and restore basic services to its citizens. Adding insult to injury, the president tweeted about Puerto Rico's Wall Street obligations, played golf, and delayed taking urgent action while people were dying.

In some ways I'm literally more afraid of the re-development process

    ...

We're colonized but we don't really speak about the United States as a colonizer on a day-to-day basis. We obviously need this help and this aid in the aftermath of Irma and Maria. So how do we tend to negotiate some of these questions of meeting our basic needs while aslo clearly parsing out how exactly we are being disposessed by the very aid that we need

In this interview Hadiya Sewer talks about the importance of mental health in the face of adversity, power relationships in parenting and empires, and the question of how to dismantle the strucural racism of American colonialism while taking care of the more pressing needs of rebuilding.
