How often do we fall short of walking perfectly in the light- If we truly understand what it means to walk in the light...Every single day-multiple times each day. --We need the Lord to cleanse us of all the unrighteousness that our steps-which are not perfectly in the light-has produced. We have an ongoing issue of sin and unrighteousness that must continually be dealt with. As such, it is very important that we understand the issue of sin, problem of sin, and dealing with sin--Not as the world does-Not as many false teachers and deceivers within the Church do-But as God intends us to see sin, understand sin, and deal with sin-all sin-This is John's focus in Verses 8-10.
