In this passage, John begins to define a true relationship with Jesus. He begins to develop his main agenda for his letters which is that not everyone in the church who claims to be a Christian actually is- many are but some are not. The Lord does not want to leave us guessing about this very important distinction- We need to know where we stand with the Lord. John's focus in this passage is on fellowship.
