Eis ist nicht gleich Eis, denn salziges Meerwasser gefriert ganz anders als süßes Seewasser. Was genau dahinter steckt, erklärt uns auch in dieser Adventsfolge wieder Mirjam. Dabei experimentieren wir mit Eiswürfeln frisch aus unseren Tiefkühlfächern und entdecken, dass salzige Eiswürfel ganz anders aussehen und schmelzen als süße. Ahnt ihr schon warum? Keine Sorge, wir gehen der kalten Materie auf den Grund und rätseln ein letztes Mal in diesem Advent rund um die Grundlagen der ozeanischen Physik.

Bevor unsere eigentlich für den Sommer gekühlten Eiswürfel im Gefrierfach versauern, nutzen wir sie doch lieber für unser nächstes Adventsexperiment. Dabei lernen wir von Mirjam mal wieder einiges über die Welt des Meeres: dass Eis im salzigen Meerwasser anders schmilzt als im Süßwasser. Und bei welchem Wasser sich ein kleiner Deckel aus geschmolzenem Eis bildet und bei welchem nicht. Und auch wenn wieder nicht gleich alles auf Anhieb funktioniert, wird sich zum Schluss alles richten, denn auf die Physik ist immer Verlass – das haben wir jetzt auf jeden Fall gelernt. Was für ein aufschlussreicher Advent.

Sie entstehen an der Grenze von zwei Wasserschichten und sehen aus wie kleine Luftschlangen – schon seit unserem ersten Interview mit Mirjam ist uns klar: Salzfinger sind ein ganz besonders spannendes Phänomen.
Vielleicht waren wir deshalb so aufgeregt, dass es gar nicht auf Anhieb geklappt hat, sie in unsere Wassergläser zu holen. Spaß hatten wir trotzdem und wissen jetzt immerhin, dass man mit Pipetten hübsche Ringe ins Wasser zaubern kann – und warum Lebensmittelfarbe und Salz sich in der Küchenozeanographie gar nicht so unähnlich sind.

Da wollten wir nur mal eine kleine Sommerpause einlegen und schon steht Weihnachten wieder vor der Tür. Ups.
Um mit dem Podcasten wieder warm zu werden, haben wir uns erst mal nur mit Vertrautem umgeben: mit Wasser, unserer Küche, ein bisschen Farbe – und mit Mirjam!
Mirjam Glessmer wird als erste echte Ozeanographin im Treibholz-Podcast immer einen Platz in unserem Herzen haben und wir freuen uns riesig, dass sie in diesem Jahr die vier Adventssonntage mit uns verbringt, um ihr liebstes Hobby mit uns zu teilen: Die Küchenozeanographie!
Zum Auftakt spielen wir mit kalten und warmen Wasserschichten, holen die Umwälzzirkulation zwischen Nordpol und Äquator in unsere Auflaufform – und landen zum Schluss doch wieder bei unserem Dauerbrenner, der Dichte.

Der Beitrag 1. Advent: Ausgleichsströmung in der Auflaufform erschien zuerst auf Treibholz Podcast.
Antonia Immerz ist die erste Informatikerin im Treibholz-Interview und auch sie hat schon früh davon geträumt, mal “was mit Meer” zu machen. Bei der MOSAiC-Expedition kümmert sie sich um das Datenmanagement, also zum Beispiel darum, dass alle Forscher:innen ihre Messergebnisse richtig ablegen. Klingt nach nem trockenen Thema? Nee, denn wenn wir eins gelernt haben, dann wie wichtig es ist, dass Forschungsdaten nachvollziehbar zugänglich gemacht werden. Denn nur so lässt sich Wissen sinnvoll vernetzen.
Besonders spannend ist der Gedanke der Vernetzung natürlich bei der MOSAiC-Expedition, wo Wissenschaftler:innen aus 70 Nationen und von 60 Instituten aufeinandertreffen. Am Ende wechseln wir dann noch mal ganz galant das Thema von den Metadaten zur Bärenwache und Antonias Erlebnissen auf dem ersten Abschnitt der Expedition.

In dieser Folge räumen wir ein bisschen unsere physikalischen Grundkenntnisse auf und Kirstin (Kiki) Schulz vom AWI hilft uns dabei. Auch sie ist Teil der MOSAiC-Expedition, um die es schon in der letzten Folge ging. Auf der Polarstern erforscht sie die Eigenheiten der Turbulenzen, denn die sind für die Physik noch ein ungelöstes Chaos, zumindest teilweise. Auch sonst klappern wir ziemlich viele Begriffe ab, die in früheren Folgen schon einmal ihren Platz gefunden haben, aber schnell wieder vergessen wurden. Wir reden über Strömungen, Konvektion, Wirbel und Vermischung. Und um die zu verstehen auch über Kaffee, Milch und darüber, was Weihnachtsmärkte mit der Tiefsee zu tun haben.

“Okay, ich hab mir jetzt schon Sorgen gemacht, wie das aerodynamisch funktioniert – aber das ergibt Sinn.” – Maxie
In dieser Folge haben wir ganz nonchalant mit Sandra Tippenhauer, eine der Forscher:innen und Expert:innen für die MOSAiC-Expedition, gesprochen. Ok, so ganz nonchalant war das gar nicht, denn es geht immerhin um MOSAiC – die größte Forschungsexpedition, die es in der Arktis jemals gab. Klar, dass es dafür eine gute Vorbereitung braucht und genau darum hat sich Sandra mit gekümmert. Wir haben mit ihr über den logistischen Aufwand für so ein Mammutprojekt gesprochen. Es geht um die Planung von Messegeräten und wie diese auf‘s Schiff kommen. Während wir uns Teile des Schiffs wie ein buntes Festivalgelände vorstellen, erklärt uns Sandra erstmal, wie so eine CTD-Sonde (Conductivity Temperature Depth) überhaupt aussieht und welche Daten damit erhoben werden können.
Bisher scheint bei der Expedition alles nach Plan zu laufen, denn auch für Ausfälle gibt es einen Notfallplan. Sandra kann sogar den Forscher:innen auf dem Schiff aus der Ferne sagen, wo sich die jeweiligen Messinstrumente befinden, falls die das mal vergessen. Das ist alles so gut durchdacht, dass wir zum Schluss nur erahnen können, aus wie vielen kleinen Teilen diese riesige Expedition und ihre Vorbereitung besteht.

“Warte mal. Hast du gerade gesagt, Muscheln sind auch manchmal Plankton?”
Für diese Folge sind wir von Berlin nach Hamburg gefahren und haben uns zusammen mit richtigen Meeresbiologie-Student:innen in eine Vorlesung zum GAME Projekt gesetzt. GAME bedeutet Globaler Ansatz durch Modulare Experimente und ist ein internationales Forschungs- und Ausbildungsprogramm. Klingt schlau? Ist es auch!
Alles, was wir nicht verstanden haben, haben uns Leo Gottschalck und Jonas Barkhau nach dem Vortrag noch mal genauer erklärt. Beide haben im Rahmen ihres Masterstudiums am GAME Projekt teilgenommen. Im Fokus ihrer Untersuchungen standen Organismen wie Muscheln, die ihre Nahrung aus dem Wasser filtern. Aber was, wenn es diese sogenannten Filtrierer plötzlich mit Mikroplastik zu tun haben?
Wir sprechen über den Einfluss von Mikroplastik und natürlichen Mikropartikeln auf die Ozeane und die kleinen und großen Unterschiede zwischen Muscheln und Walen. Außerdem geht es um Plankton und Krill. Da haben wir nämlich eine grundlegende Erkenntnis…

Der Beitrag Muscheln und Mikroplastik | Leo Gottschalck & Jonas Barkhau (GAME Projekt 2019) erschien zuerst auf Treibholz Podcast.
Nachdem uns Nadine Steiger in der letzten Folge vom meditativen Walezählen auf hoher See erzählt hat, wird es im zweiten Teil des Gesprächs wieder ein bisschen physikalischer: Es geht um unser Lieblingsthema Strömungen, aber auch um Gletscher und Schelfeis. Genauer gesagt um das Schelfeis der Antarktis. Dafür müssen wir aber erstmal erklären, was Schelfeis genau ist.
Und dann wird es ernst: Dieses von Nadine und uns so schön definierte Schelfeis wird nämlich von warmem Wasser bedroht und schmilzt. Aber woher kommt das warme Wasser überhaupt und wie kommt es unter das Schelfeis? Genau das ist Nadines Forschungsthema und sie erklärt uns gleich mal, wie eigentlich Forschung innerhalb der Ozeanographie funktioniert – und zwar weitaus unromantischer, als wir uns das gewünscht hätten. Für den romantischen Touch sind zum Schluss immer noch die Pinguine zuständig.

Es geht weiter, und zwar genau so, wie uns das vorgestellt haben: mit einem Interview. Unsere zweite Staffel soll nämlich viel, viel mehr Interviews enthalten, in denen wir schlauen Menschen halbschlaue Fragen zum Thema Ozean stellen.
Der erste schlaue Mensch, mit dem wir dafür sprechen ist Nadine Steiger. Sie promoviert gerade im Fachbereich Ozeanographie in Bergen in Norwegen und war im Frühling für zwei Monate auf einem Forschungsschiff zwischen Antarktis und Südafrika unterwegs.
Im ersten Teil unseres Gesprächs geht es um das Leben auf einem Eisbrecher, Meeresschutzgebiete, unvorhersehbare Schwierigkeiten mit der Wasserversorgung, Unterwasserkameras, riesige Datenmengen und unseren neuen Traumjob. In der nächsten Folge wird es dann wieder ein bisschen physikalischer.
