  • What Can Barber Shops Teach Us About Marketing? #653
The Barber Pole is the universal symbol for the Barber Shop.
It's been that way since the Middle Ages.
The red stripe represents bloodletting. The white stripe represents the bandages. The blue stripe represents the blood-filled vein.
The downward spinning spiral represents the aortic blood flow.
Anywhere in the world when you see that Barber Pole, regardless of any other signage, you know it's Barber Shop.
Why can't we have a Spa Pole?
A pole that universally represents the Spa.
It'd be a great marketing tool, wouldn't it!

  • Eye on China - Strategy Vs Tactics : The Great Debate #651
    Vision is the WHY
    Strategy is the WHAT
    Tactics are the HOW
If you really are the next Steve Jobs or the next Mark Zuckerberg...go ahead and focus on Vision and Strategy.
But for most of us, we need to be focussed on the TACTICS.
    That’s the execution piece.
And that’s where the game will be won or lost.

  • Eye on China - Animal Testing & The Spa Industry #650
As of today, any cosmetic product being imported to China must undergo animal testing before it is approved for sale to humans.
This of course is a major stumbling block for many International brands who have taken a strong Cruelty Free stance.
There are some positive signs that the Government is open to alternatives.
But for now at least, if your brand is against animal testing...China is not a market for you.

  • Eye on China - CBD, TCM & US-China Trade War #649
The US-China Trade War is impacting the economy in China.
In Spa & Wellness it’s having a significant impact on those looking to import & export.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) represents a great opportunity if someone can just re-package and market it better to the world.
and CBD, big new all over the world...is a loooong way off hitting the Chinese market.

  • Eye on China - What A Rising Middle Class & Ageing Population Means For Spas #648
China’s Middle Class is growing. With that, they become more educated about what the world has to offer.
As a result, they’re demanding more from their Spas. Results, evidence, efficacy is increasingly more important in this market.
And as the population is ageing, they’re become more aware of living well.
Spas have the opportunity to become their go-to resource for all things Wellnesss.
I also see opportunities for Spas in the world of Aged Care in China.

  • Eye on China - State of the Spa Nation #647
I’m here in Xi’an at the Spa China Summit this week.
First thoughts on the State of Spa Nation here...
    - 48% of Spa Operators expect business to get worse, not better
    - there have been more Spa Closings than Spa Openings in the last year
    - rising competition, increasing costs, labour shortages & failure to attract younger clientele are the main areas of concern
in short, the China Spa Market appears to be reaching maturity.
The key to success in the future will be finding a way to differentiate from the competition.

  • Spa Business Model Series - Spa Consultant #645
We're all familiar with the idea of working with a Spa Consultant to help get your Hotel Spa open.
But what about using the Spa Consultant on an on-going basis as part of your overall management solution?
If you get the right fit, you can actually fill the gaps in your current Spa Management situation...and take your Spa to new heights.
The major PRO of this option is the flexibility it affords the Hotel.
The major CON in the cost...and the challenge of finding the right Spa Consultant.
    Definitely worth thinking about.

  • Spa Business Model Series - Product House #644
Even if a Product House does not have their own spa management division, it is still possible to use them to help run your spa.
Their main objective is to sell more product so it is in their best interest to help your spa succeed.
The more treatments you do, the more products you use and the more potential there is to sell retail.
The major PROs are that the Product House will ensure your therapists are always well trained. They can also become your defacto Innovation Partner too.
The major CONs are that you are now restricted in the choice of Spa Product Brands of course. You could also get stuck with large minimum order requirements when it comes to their products. If these don't sell, you could quickly find yourself holding too much inventory.
