In the moments leading up to his death, Jesus appears to be inactive. Things seem to happen to him. They brought him, stripped him, crucified him, ridiculed, mocked, and reviled him. Yet, through all this, Jesus was still doing the will of the Father. He perfectly obeyed even passively–in a quiet and submissive way.
And when the leaders mocked him saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself," there was truth in their statement. Jesus could not save himself and still save us. The cross becomes the glory of the Christ.
Praise the Lord that he did not save himself, but endured the cross, despising its shame. In so doing, he gave life to his people.

We are Barrabas. We are the ones who are rebels, and yet have been set free from the penalty of sin, because Jesus took our place. Thank God for this marvelous gift.

March 20, 2022 Mark 14:53-72 // The Trial of Jesus
At the end of Mark 14, Jesus was on trial, but so was Peter. And it was a slow drift. He first began to distance himself physically, followed by a verbal distance. It ended in outright denial of our Lord.
Sadly, we can see ourselves in Peter's failure. We fear man more than God. We love the world more than our Lord. And our prideful self-confidence causes us to act apart from the Holy Spirit.
However, Jesus' faithfulness in his trial ended much differently. Not only is he our prototype. He is our Savior for all the times we do act in disobedience, unbelief, and rebellion. Jesus took the punishment we deserve so we can go free. He is a gracious Lord!
