In this bit of scripture, the authority of Jesus is questioned, the authority of the religious leaders is questioned, and so too, the authority of our own lives is in question.
Jesus told a simple parable that was a recast of an old prophecy from Isaiah 5. Jesus told them a story where his own death was foretold. Not only that, the story itself incited the religious leaders to want to kill him.
But his death was not in vain. The Lord Jesus died for those who would trust in him–securing their redemption. But to those who refuse to believe, there is judgement.
In the end, the question is put to us, "Who do we think we are?" Who has authority over our lives?
