A public event on the anniversary of Kristallnacht organized by the Herzog Centre at Trinity College Dublin, in association with the Trinity Long Room Hub. "Why Talk About The Holocaust?" will feature Lenny Abrahamson and Oliver Sears in conversation, and the event will be moderated by Sarah Carey.

Lenny Abrahamson

Lenny is the director of the critically-acclaimed Room. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. His latest TV series, Normal People, adapted by and based on Sally Rooney’s Man Booker long-listed novel of the same name, was released in 2020. Other work includes: Garage, Adam And Paul, What Richard Did, Frank and The Little Stranger. He is also in development on a number of projects.

Oliver Sears

Oliver a London-born Dublin-based art dealer. He is the son of a Holocaust survivor & a former trustee​ of Holocaust Education Trust Ireland. ​He is a frequent contributor to radio and newspapers including RTE and The Irish Times. He gave ​his lecture ​'The Objects of Love' ​for the 2019 annual Kristallnacht lecture at Trinity College Dublin​.​

Sarah Carey

Sarah Carey is a writer, broadcaster and communications consultant. She writes a column for the Irish Independent on a Saturday and has previously written for The Sunday Independent, The Sunday Times and The Irish Times. She hosted the award winning and critically acclaimed Talking Point with Sarah Carey on Newstalk for 6 years and continues to contribute to national and international television and radio current affairs programmes.

A panel discussion as part of the SHAPE-ID webinar series Shaping Conversations on Interdisciplinary Research in partnership with Trinity Long Room Hub.

The SHAPE-ID Policy Brief recommends that funders and policy makers invite greater Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) participation in designing and evaluating inter- and transdisciplinary research funding calls and adapt funding instruments to acknowledge some of the unique features of inter- and transdisciplinarity, such as the time it takes to build mutually respectful collaborations. But what are the challenges for funding agencies on the ground, and how have they innovated in developing funding programmes? The webinar will invite representatives of funding agencies from different European countries to discuss their challenges and efforts to develop funding programmes with AHSS involvement in inter- and transdisciplinary research. Professor Jane Ohlmeyer (Trinity College Dublin), Principal Investigator of the SHAPE-ID project and Chair of the Irish Research Council, will chair the discussion.

A panel discussion as part of the ‘Sonic Spaces’ series.

A rise in the number of sound-focused cultural productions is one of the key trends to emerge in the performing arts in recent years, including the reworking of various literary works and figures in the direction of sound and music centred experiences. How do artists and practitioners adapt written works into coherent listening experiences? What principles of sound design guide the development of creative soundscapes for the performing arts? A panel of established creative practitioners discuss these and related issues: Evangelia Rigaki, Head of Music at Trinity, who will discuss her installation opera This Hostel Life (Irish National Opera, 2019) based on Melatu Uche Okorie’s book of the same name; Kevin Gleeson, a prominent sound designer for theatre and film, who will discuss recent collaborations with Dead Centre (Hamnet, Beckett’s Room, To Be A Machine); and Nicholas Johnson, Associate Professor of Drama at Trinity and co-founder of the Samuel Beckett Laboratory, who will discuss his recent dramaturgical work on Beckett’s Room, a sound-focused play and co-production of Dead Centre and Gate Theatre. The panel will be chaired by Ruth Barton, Head of School of the Creative Arts at Trinity.

‘Sonic Spaces’ is organised by Jennifer O’Meara, Department of Film, as part of the Creative Arts Practice Research theme. It is supported by the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute.

Dr Jade Dillon is a lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick. The Staff-Postgraduate Seminar Series is a fortnightly meeting which has been integral to the School of English research community since the 1990s. The aim of the seminar series is to provide a relaxed and convivial atmosphere for staff and students to present their research to their peers. The series also welcomes distinguished guest lecturers from the academic community outside Trinity College to present on their work. It is a fantastic opportunity to share ideas and engage with the diverse research taking place within the School. The series conveners for the academic year 2020-21 are current PhD students Orlaith Darling, Janice Deitner and Maggie Masterson.

A research seminar as part of the Identities in Transformation Postgraduate Seminar Series, in partnership with Trinity Long Room Hub.

Continuing on from last year's series, this seminar explores the concept of embodiment, and will seek to interrogate how concepts of the body and embodiment influence our knowledge of, perception of, and negotiation with the world through which we move. Talks will explore processes of embodiment and disembodiment, and will touch on the development of identity in relation to embodied aspects of the self, with special focuses on gender, emotion, performance and social belonging.

The seminar will feature talks by Orlaith Darling (School of English), Nandini Gupta (School of Ecumenics/Peace Studies) and Morgan Wait (School of Histories and Humanities). They will be joined by faculty members Dr Miranda Fay Thomas (School of Creative Arts) and Dr Lilith Acadia (Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND Fellow 2019/2020, currently at National Taiwan University).

A lecture by Prof Nicholas Allen (University of Georgia) organised by the Oscar Wilde Centre in partnership with Trinity School of English and the Willson Institute, University of Athens, Georgia.

The coast is the scene of some of Irish literature’s most famous moments. James Joyce drew the imperial history of Ireland in the tangled outlines of Molly Bloom's memories of Gibraltar at Howth Head, while Anne Enright sketched the fragile bonds that connect the island’s diaspora in The Gathering. Seamus Heaney patrolled a northern archipelago that turned from violence to pastoral in the late poetry, just as Sinead Morrissey remakes Belfast’s shipyards and skyscapes in her latest collection, On Balance. Beginning with the maritime inheritances of the Yeats brothers, this lecture charts a series of cultural spaces where water meets land, picturing Irish literature as a littoral art whose marine aesthetics underpin significant works from John Banville, Eiléan ní Chuilleanáin and Kevin Barry.

A talk by Professor Michael Cronin (TCD) as part of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies Research Seminar Series in association with Trinity Long Room Hub.

The future of travel is central to contemporary debates about pandemics and ‘flight shaming’. The nature and status of travel as an absolute right or unquestionable good are being called into question in the context of globalized infectious diseases and well-publicised evidence pointing to the prohibitive ecological costs of mass air travel. The lecture will explore a number of interpretive frameworks from critical ecology to travel writing and translation studies that might help us to understand and navigate a post-nomadic future.

Michael Cronin, BA (TCD), MA (UCD), PhD (TCD), FTCD, holds the 1776 Chair of French at Trinity College. He taught in the Université of Tours, the École Normale Supérieure (Cachan) and was Director of the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies at Dublin City University. He is an elected Member of the Royal Irish Academy, the Academia Europaea, and he is an Officer in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques. He has published extensively on language, culture, translation and travel writing.

The subject of countless songs, films, novels and works of art, 'the American Dream' has been a defining theme of the modern American ethos. As US election day approaches in the midst of a global pandemic, climate catastrophe and escalating racial tensions, we want to ask if this dream -- with its emphasis on equality, opportunity and freedom -- has become a nightmare. With the US now ranking as one of the most unequal G7 countries in the world, our panel of experts will explore this topic from a range of social and cultural perspectives, and in anticipation of a crucial and complicated American election day.

Speakers:

Bernice Murphy is Associate Professor at the School of English, Trinity College Dublin, where she lectures in popular literature and specialises in the study of place and space in American horror and gothic narratives. Her books include The Rural Gothic in American Popular Culture (2013).

Larycia Hawkins is a scholar, professor of political science, and activist. Professor Hawkins teaches and researches at the University of Virginia (UVA), where she is jointly appointed in the departments of Politics and Religious Studies. She is part of the UVA Democracy Initiative’s Religion, Race & Democracy Lab. Her publications include Jesus and Justice: The Moral Framing of the Black Agenda (2015).

Nicholas Johnson is an Associate Professor in Drama in Trinity’s School of Creative Arts. He is a founding co-director of the Beckett Summer School at TCD and a co-founder of the new Trinity Centre for Beckett Studies. He publishes across several fields and has been a regular media commentator on the US election landscape.

Ed Pavlić is Distinguished Research Professor of English and African American Studies and affiliated faculty in Creative Writing at the University of Georgia, Athens (GA). He is the author of 'Who Can Afford to Improvise?': James Baldwin and Black Music, the Lyric and the Listeners (2015).
