Joep Leerssen is Professor of European
Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He
has worked on the history of national identity
articulations, in Ireland as well as other
European countries, national stereotyping
and on the transnational history of national
movements.
Among his English-languages monographs
are Mere Irish & Fíor-Ghael, Remembrance
and Imagination, and National Thought in
Europe. He used the funds of the Spinoza
Prize, awarded to him in 2008, to set up the
Study Platform on Interlocking Nationalism
(www.spinnet.eu); its flagship publication is
the Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in
Europe (2018, online as ernie.uva.nl). He is an
Honorary Fellow of Trinity College Dublin.
