Professor Urmimala Sarkar Munsi (JNU) and Professor Esther Hamburger (University of São Paulo) explored how memories can be materialised in creative forms such as film and dance taking a devised performance, WALK by Maya Krishna Rao, and an 8” short poetic experimental film, Rough Stone (2009) by Julia Zakia, as their case studies.

The Global Humanities Institute also offered a workshop led by Professor Bruce Shapiro, Executive Director of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at Columbia University, on practical ways to incorporate self-care and ethical practice for trauma-facing researchers, establishing a basic framework for understanding how direct and vicarious trauma exposure affect both the subjects of research and researchers. This workshop considered basic self-care and peer support strategies.

The CHCI-Mellon Crises of Democracy Global Humanities Institute (GHI) is a partnership between 5 universities—Trinity College Dublin, University of São Paulo, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Zagreb, and the Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University. The GHI brings together early career researchers and a consortium of humanities scholars to explore crises of democracy through the lens of cultural trauma. The second and most significant phase of the GHI, a 9-day summer institute in Dubrovnik wherein faculty and early career researchers from around the world came together to examine crises of democracy through the prism of cultural trauma from a comparative global perspective, has just concluded. The GHI in Dubrovnik comprised of 40 researchers travelling from 10 countries, 5 continents, and representing over 30 disciplines in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The programme consisted of lectures, panels, practical skills workshops, film screenings, and early career researcher presentations.

The first day of the Crises of Democracy Global Humanities Institute in Dubrovnik began with a fantastic introductory lecture delivered by Professor Mridula Mukherjee. Prof Mukherjee employed a long-term historical frame to understand the evolution of democracy in the modern world.

A lecture by Prof Shamil Jeppie (University of Cape Town) as part of the 'Out of the Ashes' lecture series.

In the political crisis in northern Mali in late 2012 through to early 2013 Timbuktu was occupied by rebels who more-or-less ran the town for a number of months until French-led forces compelled their withdrawal. It was reported that during their last days the insurgents destroyed thousands of manuscripts from the town’s main archive-library. This act of vandalism drew a huge outcry of revulsion and condemnation. However, the extent of the damage and destruction was exaggerated; or, at least, we are uncertain of the extent of the loss of manuscripts. Furthermore, a number of family collections with thousands of items in hundreds of metal crates had been moved unnoticed from the town to the capital, Bamako, some 800 km away. A large part of an historic town’s archive had been relocated piece-meal over a number of weeks; sent by donkey-cart to river-boats on the Niger River and then by local taxis on the narrow national road under cover of night or other camouflage.

The crisis and the apparently secret transfer of the manuscripts have been sensationally covered in the media and recent journalistic works. But it led me to think of the longer-term history of the movement of books in the region (from at least the 1400s) which, after all is part of an ecological zone that has a long history of nomadism. It also led me to reflect on other examples of book destruction, other examples of the transplant of books under various types of stressful conditions; whether due to war or natural disasters. The events and narratives around Timbuktu were thus a useful way to begin to think of a not unfamiliar case of mobility in relation to books and archives, although it appears it is or has seldom provided an opportunity for reflection. This brings to mind March Bloch’s words to the effect that “for the historian there is nothing like a good catastrophe”

A panel discussion with Dr Carole Holohan (TCD), Prof Kathleen Lynch (UCD), Dr Michael Pierse (QUB) and Garrett Phelan as part of the 'Trinity and the Changing City' Series.

There has been very little public debate on class in Dublin compared to other social issues. Yet there are many class signals that lots of Dubliners can read, including accent, neighbourhood and educational background. Social class is not only difficult to break out of but also impacts the life chances and health of Dubliners. In this interactive session Dr Carole Holohan, Assistant Professor in Modern Irish History at Trinity, Prof Kathleen Lynch, Professor of Equality Studies at University College Dublin, Dr Michael Pierse, Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts, English and Other Languages at Queen’s University Belfast, and Visual Artist Garrett Phelan shed light on one of the final taboos in Irish society.

Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He

has worked on the history of national identity

articulations, in Ireland as well as other

European countries, national stereotyping

and on the transnational history of national

movements.

Among his English-languages monographs

are Mere Irish & Fíor-Ghael, Remembrance

and Imagination, and National Thought in

Europe. He used the funds of the Spinoza

Prize, awarded to him in 2008, to set up the

Study Platform on Interlocking Nationalism

(www.spinnet.eu); its flagship publication is

the Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in

Europe (2018, online as ernie.uva.nl). He is an

Honorary Fellow of Trinity College Dublin.
