Siri: An actress on stage, her iPhone as her only partner.

A production by La Messe Basse as part of the Trinity Long Room Hub 'What does it Mean to Be Human in the 21st Century?' series. Under the direction of Maxime Carbonneau, the actress Laurence Dauphinais interacts with Siri and in a precise game of questions and answers, deploys ingenious strategies to invite her partner to reveal herself.

This podcast includes a post performance conversation with director Maxime Carbonneau and actress Laurence Dauphinais hosted by Professor Linda Doyle. Professor Linda Doyle is Trinity’s Dean of Research and a Professor of Engineering and The Arts in Trinity College Dublin. She is a funded Investigator at CONNECT and served previously as Director of CONNECT.

In conversation with Trinity Long Room Hub Visiting Research Fellow Alex Alsemgeest (Koninklijke Bibliotheek, National Library of the Netherlands) chaired by Laura Shanahan (TCD) organised in collaboration with the Library of Trinity College Dublin.

Alex Alsemgeest is a book historian and researcher with the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, National Library of the Netherlands. Alex has more than a decade of experience in some of the leading research libraries in the Netherlands and Sweden. His research interests include book trade, natural history, the history of libraries and collections and Swedish-Dutch cultural history. He has published in both popular magazines and academic journals. His book, In krabbengang door kreeftenboeken, was nominated for best book on nature in the Netherlands in 2016.

On Wednesday the 29th May, join Desmond Ryan for an informal conversation with Prof Phillip Morgan from the University of York in association with the School of Law. Professor Morgan's research project will look at Tort Law, Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, and Machine Learning. His research asks whether the law of tort will need to adapt to meet the demands which new technologies will place on it.

This work has the opportunity to help shape legislation and legal developments in Ireland, and England. Mr Morgan’s work has already assisted courts (including the Supreme Court of Ireland) and government bodies around the world to develop the law of vicarious liability, and tort, to challenging modern conditions.

Our panellists will look at why racial inequality persists after the abolition of slavery and how racism continues to evolve under different guises; the role of the Irish Americans in race relations and the connection to Ireland’s civil rights movement; the experience of institutionalised racism in higher education; and online toxic hate speech and digital racism.

In anticipation of Trinity’s Green Week, the Trinity Long Room Hub's latest Behind the Headlines looks to the humanities to take on Climate Change. How do history, literature, film and art help us understand the contemporary environmental challenges we face?

As scientists warn us of the consequences of our human impact on the environment, the arts help us visualise the consequences of climate change and natural catastrophe, eliciting emotional responses that prompt action. By looking to the past, we can understand historical examples of conflict and climate and the unintended consequences brought about by attempts to mitigate the effects of climate warming.
