A lecture by Prof Luke O'Neill as part of the as part of the 'What does it Mean to be Human in the 21st Century?' series.

It all started with a bang. Or did it? Opposites attract. Or do they? We’re only human. But for how much longer? We’ll all die one day. Or will we?

Prof Luke O’Neill, will talk about our amazing existence and the future of humankind. He will explore what it is to be human from a scientific perspective, from the origin of life on Earth that led to us evolving on the plains of Africa some 200,000 years ago, to what makes us truly human, with topics ranging from why we listen to music, to the science of love, sleep, humor, ageing, death and even beyond death. He will also discuss our ingenuity as a species and consider how artificial intelligence is changing the world as we know it. So if you want to live long and prosper, come along and join him on a roller coaster ride through life, the universe and everything for humankind.

The lecture series is organised by the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute in partnership with The Dock, Accenture’s global research and incubation hub in Dublin.

This second lecture of the new three year lecture series 'Out of the Ashes' will be presented by Dr Ed Parsons, Geospatial Technologist, Google

Maps are more used today than at any point in history. Many of us use maps every day, sometimes many times a day. Maps, delivered via apps on the mobile devices we all carry, are as much part of our lives today as credit cards and reading glasses. The term map is itself is perhaps no longer appropriate as these maps are, in fact, visualisations of massive real-time databases that mirror the world around us. Behind these highly-interactive maps, a network of services provide a real-time nervous system of road and rail conditions, weather, the temperature of our homes and even how busy our favourite pub is! This is the system I term ‘ambient location’ and it will form a key building block of the future smart cities will we inhabit. But—and there is, of course, a ‘but’—this real-time mirror of the world is, by its very nature, different to the world-view reflected in traditional cartography and the maps of the past. Maps on our mobile phones are ephemeral in the extreme, only representing the world as it is now, rejecting the past to analytical use at best and in most cases to irrelevance. How we have reached this point, to what extent it is a problem and how we might address it—these issues form the topic of this lecture.

From Joyce's Ulysses to Fáilte Ireland's latest rebranding of Dublin as 'surprising by nature', the city has repeatedly been a subject of mediation. Yet many aspects of its development persistently escape reflection in the city's arts and media. Considering the challenge of representing other Dublins and Dublin's others, the session will feature contributions from the poet, playwright and former Ireland Chair of Poetry Paula Meehan, the artist Dorothy Smith, a key visual documenter of the contemporary inner city, and the academic and film classifier Zélie Asava, author of The Black Irish Onscreen (2013).

This public lecture will be presented by Dr Raul Cârstocea, Lecturer in European Studies at the Europa Universität Flensburg and Fellow at the Imre Kertész Kolleg Jena.

This talk will address the idea of ‘the nation’ in Romania after 1918 and its importance for the radicalisation of interwar politics. It will briefly discuss the history of competing nationalisms in 19th century Romania, the country’s wartime experience and the post-war territorial changes that resulted in a significantly expanded and politically heterogeneous entity referred to as ‘Greater Romania.’ This territory was marked by the overlapping legacies of the three Eastern empires that collapsed at the end of the First World War (Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Russian). This incomplete or failed project of nationalisation and the numerous ‘questions’ it left unresolved, the talk argues, opened up the space for radical politics and led to the growing popularity of Romania’s native fascist movement – the ‘Legion of the Archangel Michael’ or ‘Iron Guard’. This talk will argue against the existence of a monolithic ‘Romanian nationalism’ and explore the fluid, intersecting, and competing nationalisms in Romania during this period.

This public lecture will be presented by Dr Aneta Stępień, Centre for European Studies, Trinity College Dublin.

This talk will address the complex social and political situation in which women’s organizations operated in Poland under partition and the intimate relationship that developed between the fight for national independence and the political independence of women. Although presented as equal in the struggle for independence, Polish suffragettes faced criticism and resistance from different groups of men: politicians, workers and the military. The talk will focus on the role of the nationalist and militant/militarist suffragettes in obtaining voting rights for women in 1918 and key figure Aleksandra Piłsudska. Drawing from her Memoirs, published in 1940 in London, the talk will consider the potential problems in commemorating the achievements of the women’s suffrage movement in Poland.

This public lecture is presented by Mark Cornwall, Professor of European History, University of Southampton.

This year marks the centenary of the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a monarchy whose disappearance from the European map transformed the history of the twentieth century. At a time when the UK is planning to exit from another multi-national European body, this talk will revisit the reasons why different peoples decided to exit the Habsburg Empire and create independent states at the end of the First World War. What expectations guided the idealists who created the new Czechoslovak and Yugoslav states? Certainly, in the years that followed, the hopes of many were quickly deflated as new borders and identities sprang up. It leads us to ask, in retrospect, to what extent the Habsburg Empire can be considered a ‘prison of peoples.’ Or should we follow those like the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig who viewed the Habsburg Empire with great nostalgia, a cosmopolitan experiment with much to teach us?
