As Ireland emerges from the economic crash and austerity which ensued, Dublin’s housing issues have escalated. A collaboration between the Trinity Long Room Hub’s Behind the Headlines and Trinity and the Changing City discussion series, this session will take a broad temporal view on Dublin’s housing issues over the decades. Contributors will include Paula Mayock, Assistant Professor at Trinity’s School of Social Work and Social Policy and author of Living in Limbo: Homeless Young People’s Paths to Housing, Ronan Lyons, Assistant Professor of Economics at Trinity, Charles Duggan, Heritage Officer with Dublin City Council and lead on the restoration of 14 Henrietta Street, the inner city’s most intact tenement building, and Lisa Griffith, historian and author of Dublin Then and Now.

Trinity and the Changing City is organised by the Identities in Transformation research theme , led by Tom Walker, School of English, Daniel Faas, Department of Sociology, and Sarah Kerr , Trinity Long Room Hub, and is supported by the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute.

Professor Darryl Jones's main area of research and expertise lies in the area of popular literature, particularly in the fields of horror fiction and film, and of Victorian and Edwardian adventure fiction. He has published and edited many studies in these areas, including his 'Collected Ghost Stories of M. R. James' (2011), and his 'Horror Stories: Classic Tales from Hoffmann to Hodgson' (2014).

Trinity's Department of English is ranked 28th in the world.

2018 marks ten years since the controversial €64m bailout of the Irish banks by the government, that was to lead to an unprecedented collapse in property prices, the loss of sovereignty in the form of the 2010 bailout of Ireland by the IMF/ECB/EU ‘Troika’, and deep and prolonged economic recession.

Ten years on, as part of the Trinity Long Room Hub ‘Behind the Headlines’ public discussion series, a distinguished panel will examine the changes wrought in the Irish financial, business and cultural landscape by those events and will ask: has enough changed?

Ed Sibley, Deputy Governor, Prudential Regulation, Central Bank of Ireland

Ed Sibley was appointed Deputy Governor, Prudential Regulation on 1 September 2017. He is an ex-officio Member of the Central Bank Commission and is also a member of the Supervisory Board of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). As Deputy Governor, Prudential Regulation, Ed is responsible for leading the supervision of credit institutions, insurance firms and the asset management industry.

Joan Burton TD

Joan Burton is now on her fifth term as Labour Party TD for Dublin West. She was the Labour Party spokesperson on Finance from 2002 to 2011 and was elected Deputy Leader in 2007. In September 2008 she was a major critic of the bank guarantee and the subsequent legislation. Deputy Burton served as Tánaiste and leader of the Labour Party from 2014 to 2016 and has held a number of ministerial roles, most recently as Minister for Social Protection from 2011 to 2016. In the current Dáil she is again Labour’s Finance spokesperson and she serves on the Budget Oversight Committee.

Simon Carswell, Irish Times correspondent

As Finance Correspondent for the Irish Times, Simon Carswell covered the banking crisis from 2007 to 2012; this work earned him the National Journalist of the Year award from the National Newspapers of Ireland in 2011. He is the author of two books: Something Rotten: Irish Banking Scandals (2006) and Anglo Republic: Inside the Bank That Broke Ireland (2011). He was the Irish Times Washington Correspondent from 2013 to 2017 and is a regular contributor to radio and television.

Antonia Hart, a PhD candidate in Trinity’s School of Histories and Humanities

Author Antonia Hart’s current research Irish Women in Business, 1850-1922 funded by an Irish Research Council Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship 2016-2019, looks at Irish women running businesses in the period just after the Famine up to the foundation of the State. Hart's work has appeared in the anthologies These Are Our Lives, Incorrigibly Plural and Momaya Annual Review and she is the author of Ghost Signs of Dublin (2014).

Dr Philip Coleman, Associate Professor in Trinity’s School of English

Philip Coleman is a specialist in American literature with a particular interest in twentieth-century and contemporary poetry and short fiction. He is also Trinity’s Registrar of Chambers, an annual officer appointed by the Provost to allocate campus rooms to students.

The Joan Roth and William M. Roth Lecture Series was established in 2017 to honour the contributions made over many years by Joan and William M. Roth to the arts and culture in Ireland. This year’s lecture/reading reflects the Roth’s particular interest in literature, poetry and the book arts. From William Roth’s bibliography of English and American first editions of W.B. Yeats’s work, published in 1939, through to his establishment of the Colt Press, in the 1950s, the Roths have long been involved in promoting poetry and literature more generally in Ireland and further afield.

It is particularly fitting that this year’s Roth lecture will be given by the US American poet, artist, editor, writer and printmaker Erica Van Horn. Like the Roths, she has spent many years living and working in Ireland where she has enjoyed a long friendship with the Roth family. Erica was born in New Hampshire in 1954. The Book Remembers Everything: The Work of Erica Van Horn, was shown at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale in 2010, where there is an archive of her books and papers. Among her most recent publications is Living Locally, with a foreword by Susan Howe, published by Uniformbooks in 2011/14.

A public lecture by Professor Genevieve Bell, Director of the 3A Institute, Florence Violet McKenzieChair, and a Distinguished Professor at the Australian National University.

Professor Bell who is described as an anthropologist, technologist and futurist, is best known for her work at the intersection of cultural practice and technology development. She has spent over 15 years at Intel where she was promoted to Vice President for Strategy and was also elected as a senior fellow, the first female to achieve such a prestigious position in the company. She now heads up a new institute at the Australian National University called the Autonomy, Agency and Assurance (3A) Institute, launched in September 2017 focusing on “building a new applied science around the management of artificial intelligence, data, technology and their impact on humanity’’.

This is the inaugural talk of a new public lecture series ‘What does it mean to be Human?’ organised by the Trinity Long Room Hub and Trinity Research and Innovation. In this high-profile lecture series, experts from enterprise and education will reflect on what it means to be human at the turn of the 21st century with the growing influence of technology on the way we live, work and communicate.

This lecture is part of a series entitled "Beyond the Book of Kells: The stories of eight other medieval manuscripts from the library of Trinity College Dublin."

In this final lecture of the series, Dr Immo Warntjes from the Department of History at Trinity College Dublin will discuss MS 52: The Book of Armagh. This work is probably Trinity's most important manuscript after the Book of Kells. Copied at the behest of Torbach, abbot of Armagh, in the early ninth century by the scribe Ferdomnach, TCD MS 52 contains not only the earliest text of the New Testament from Ireland, but also a suite of works without which Ireland's patron saint, Patrick, would be almost unknown.
