Of all the great heroes of the Old Testament, no one comes closer to foreshadowing the life of Christ than Joseph the son of Jacob; His journey from the pit (Genesis 37) to the palace (Genesis 41) prefigures Christ’s triumphant transition from the Cross to the Crown. Might it not also represent the destiny of those who believe in the Lord?

Genesis 25:21-23

God’s prophetic word to Rebekah regarding Jacob and Esau, the twins in her womb, is still being fulfilled today. In the Middle East, the children of Jacob are still struggling with the children of Esau. But on a more personal level, Jacob and Esau are still at war within our own soul.

“Now what is this never-ending war we face? What is this raging battle we're in? Well friend, it is the battle of our two natures! The old nature (Esau) which is dominated by the flesh and the new nature (Jacob) which is liberated by the Spirit of God.”

The experiences of the Old Testament saints contain critical spiritual instruction for New Testament Christians. For example, in Genesis 24, we read the beautiful story of Abraham sending his servant to seek out a Bride for his only son Isaac. But the story is also a powerful prophetic picture of how God (the Father) sends His Servant (the Holy Spirit) to seek out a Bride (the Church) for His only Son (the Lord Jesus Christ)!

Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Therefore, know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying,"In you all the nations shall be blessed." So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

Galatians 3:6-9

The Apostle Paul confronted the confusion created by the Judaizers in the Galatian churches by reminding them that the Gospel, preached to Abraham 2000 years earlier, had promised salvation to all who would believe, regardless of race or nationality. Today, 2,000 years later, we may need to hear that again.

The most significant of the 7 separations that tested the faith of our father Abraham was God’s commandment to sacrifice his only son. Sad to say, many in the modern American church have never considered how this account prefigured God’s sacrifice of His only Son 2,000 years later!

“This is the only type in the Old Testament where God requires a human sacrifice; where God reveals the necessity for a human victim to atone for sin; for as it was that man had sinned, it must be by man, not the sacrifice of beasts, that Divine justice would be satisfied.”
