Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day (Resurrection Sunday) to a village called Emmaus... So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

Throughout the Bible, God hid Himself when He came among His people—'incognito’—disguised and mostly unrecognized. Even on the day of His resurrection, Mary mistook Him for a gardener, and the disciples on the Emmaus Road walked with Him but knew Him not. The question for us is, “Can WE recognize the risen Christ among us today?”

Truly you are God who hides Himself, O God and Savior of Israel.

One of the greatest mysteries of God is how He hides Himself in plain sight. He reveals Himself yet remains hidden, and remains hidden even as He reveals Himself. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, He walks with us, yet we recognize Him not.
