Based in Toronto, Ontario, Paul Gilligan writes and draws the syndicated comic strip Pooch Café, which has been twice nominated by the National Cartoonist Society for best strip. Weaned on Mad magazine, super-hero comics and “Bloom County,” Paul attended Sheridan College for animation and illustration and took comedy writing at the Film Institute in Ottawa. He joined The Ottawa Citizen newspaper as its on-staff illustrator, where he won awards in both illustration and design, and also found work in advertising, editorial cartooning, storyboarding, comic books and animation, and finally set up shop in downtown Toronto as a freelancer, where his roster of illustration clients included Time, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, Disney, and Wired. He’s the author-illustrator of the graphic novel series Pluto Rocket and the chapter book series King of the Mole People. He’s developed a number of animated TV series with places like Sony Animation, The Cartoon Network, YTV, and The CW, and has contributed cartoons to MAD Magazine, Harvard, and Reader’s Digest. His newest graphic novel is Boy vs. Shark.
The story of Boy vs Shark goes like this: “In the summer of 1975, 10-year-old Paul Gilligan doesn’t have a whole lot to worry about other than keeping his comic books untarnished, getting tennis balls off roofs and keeping up with the increasingly bold stunts of his best friend, David. And then Jaws comes to town. Suddenly everyone is obsessing over this movie about a shark ripping people to pieces. And if you haven’t seen it, not only are you missing out, you’re also kind of a wimp. Needless to say, Jaws leaves young Paul a cowering mess, and underlines the growing gap between him and David as well as the distance between where he stands and the world’s expectations of a boy’s ‘manliness’. And when Jaws himself becomes a kind of macho Jiminy Cricket for Paul, what is a scared and overwhelmed boy to do?”

Word on the Street is a celebration of Toronto’s books and magazines. At this year’s Toronto event, attendees spent the weekend meandering through the vibrant marketplace, finding books, magazines, and more. Many Indigenous and Canadian authors exhibited across multiple stages of all-ages programming, including a dedicated kids stage. The festival programming included writers’ workshops that go beyond the craft on four stages around the Queen’s Park area of Toronto. At one point, I even heard a typewriter.
For this event, as in the past, Canadian comic book creators and illustrators were amidst the many exhibitors. This report focuses on those creators including:
Keith Grachow – Keith Grachow is a comic book author-illustrator, graphic designer, and instructor who teaches workshops on illustration. Keith has written for SCI by AH Comics, co-written a story in Cauldron, authored his own comics (Yost the Golem, Bounty Hunter Kai) and co-created many comic books and anthology stories (Strange Case with Mark Bertolini for Scout Comics, Checkmate Blues with Robert Iveniuk and Toronto Comix Anthology 3-Snow Blind with Howard Wong ) and children’s books with his mother Amy (Up-In-The-Sky series). He has also worked in animation, as a digital ink-and-paint artist for the Disney movies ‘Winnie the Pooh’ and ‘Princess and the Frog’, and designed toy packages for products like Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon and the Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Currently, Keith is co-authoring and illustrating the graphic novel, Summer on The Swing, with his mother Amy Grachow; the semi-autobiographical comic tells the story of her upbringing in a bungalow colony in upstate New York in the 1960s. Discover more about Keith Grachow online at kgrachow.com and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/keith_grachow/

He edited Peter Hsu’s Quadrant. He hand lettered comics for publishers DC, Image and Eclipse. He also wrote and drew for Image. The story of The Cosmic Con goes like this: “Toronto, 1968. Herbie Weingarten, a teenager in his last year of high school, finds that his uncle Jeffrey, a holocaust survivor, has been taken in by a new religious movement called, “Exalted Consciousness”. The young man tries to extricate his uncle from the group even while his uncle tries to pull him into it. Visit Toronto’s downtown core when Yorkville was a hippy haven, Rochdale College was a centre of the illicit drug trade and bands had names like Intercontinental Ballistic Grapefruit. Watch as personalities are broken down and moulded in the pursuit of power and money by the mysterious Baron Gerhard Von Albrecht.
