Today we’re going to talk about a little unknown creature to many of you, that some call the Water Panther. The Ojibwa call it  Mishipeshu. They say the entity lives near Michipicoten and Manitoulin Island in Lake Superior, and is often regarded as a symbol of the lake’s power. Mishipeshu is able to cause storms, waves, and whirlpools. The water spirit as some call it travels through underwater tunnels, speaking in a roaring hiss that sounds like rushing water. Mishipeshu is an amalgamation of many different animal parts. Sort of like a Frankenstein’s monster of all the animals you might find in the Great Lakes Region.  Some say Mishipeshu has the head and paws of an enormous cat, the horns of a bison, the scaly body of a snake (or the feathered body of a bird), a spiky back and tail, and any other number of contrasting characteristics.  Some say he is about the size of a lynx or mountain lion, others say he is unfathomably large.

The Mayan Batman

What if we told you that Batman was from Mesoamerica. A much darker version of the dark knight. A humanoid bipedal beast that existed thousands of years ago? Would you believe it, would you shake in terror? Well some of you might not but if you know the legend of Camazotz you just might. Camazotz was the Mayan bat god of night, sacrifice, and death. Camazotz was said to have the head of a bat, a partial face mask, pointy ears, and the body of a man. Sound familiar? However, Camazotz did not start his tale with the question… you ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight?

On August 26 2017 two kayakers on the Red river in North Dakota, came across a body wrapped in plastic and duct tape hung up on a log around 545pm. It was later determined to be 22 year old Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind. A native woman who was reported missing on August 19. A couple was arrested earlier that week on suspicion of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. They were also in possession of a newborn child that the police believed was Greywind's. Join us today in this horrific true crime edition of Nightmares of the Americas. 

Our women, girls, and two-spirts are being taken from us in an alarming way.  As of 2016, the National Crime Information Center has reported 5,712 cases of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls. Strikingly, the U.S Department of Justice missing persons database has only reported 116 cases.  The majority of these murders are committed by non-Native people on Native-owned land. The lack of communication combined with jurisdictional issues between state, local, federal, and tribal law enforcement, make it nearly impossible to begin the investigative process. According to some tribes, red is the only color the spirits can see.  By wearing red, it is everyone's hope that we can call back the missing spirits of our Indigenous sisters and daughters and lay them to rest.

• Happy Native American Heritage Month. In this episode we go over a little unheard area full of creeps and spoops known as the Bridgewater Triangle. It is said this area is full of  paranormal phenomena, ranging from UFOs to poltergeists, orbs, balls of fire and other spectral phenomena, various bigfoot-like sightings, giant snakes, thunderbirds and creatures called the Pukwudgie. This land was occupied by the Wampanoag people.

Trigger warning for all pour native folks out there that don't speak about this subject. Please move to the next episode and we love all of you.   For those who stayed...In the Navajo or the Diné culture, a skinwalker is a type of harmful witch who has the ability to turn into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal. This witch is called “yee naaldlooshii” by the Diné, which translates to “with it, he goes on all fours.” It is just one of several types of Diné witches and is considered the most volatile and dangerous.  In order to become a Skinwalker, he or she must be initiated by a secret society that requires the evilest of deeds – the killing of a close family member, most often a sibling. After this task has been completed, the individual then acquires supernatural powers, which gives them the ability to shape-shift into animals. Most often, they are seen in the form of coyotes, wolves, foxes, cougars, dogs, and bears, but can take the shape of any animal. They then wear the skins of the animals they transform into, hence, the name Skinwalker.  Don't forget to email us your stories for the Halloween Bonus episode. Throughout Mesoamerican culture, they practiced human sacrifice and ritual cannibalism to placate the god of the underworld Mictlantecuhtli ( Mik-Lan-the-klulee). Mictlantecuhtli  is usually portrayed in art as a skeleton or covered in bones with red spots representing blood. He wears a skull mask, bone ear plugs, a costume of owl feathers and even a necklace of eyeballs. He has curly black hair and powerful eyes which allow him to penetrate the gloom of the underworld.  The owl was a symbol of a bad omen and death.
