Truly Twisted

The S.K. Pierce Mansion is a towering Second Empire Victorian home in Gardner, Massachusetts, built between 1873 and 1875. From the outside, it looks almost exactly like the kind of house you would expect to find at the center of a Victorian ghost story which makes the rumors of murder and mischief that much easier to believe. But with records lost and deaths swept under the rug, we may never know the full story - except for what the spirits tell us.  This week we are joined on the mic by Kaydra Brannan of Perplexity: A Mystery Podcast, if you like spooky mysteries and anything unexplained, be sure to check her out too.

For our next haunted house with a true crime origin we are heading to Amityville in Long Island New York. This week Alecia is joined by a special guest, Sierra Zorn, on the mic to discuss the infamous house of horrors.  On November 13th 1974 23 year old Ronald Defeo Jr shot and killed all six members of his family while they slept in their beds. He claimed to have been driven by an entity telling him to kill and would spend the remainder of his life in prison.  Despite the horrors that had taken place in the home, young parents George and Kathy Lutz couldnt pass up the price tag. However they would only last 28 days in the home calling on the help of Ed and Lorraine Warren when paranormal activity reached an all time high.

On August 4th, 1892, 69-year-old Andrew Borden settled onto his living room couch for a mid-morning nap at 11 AM, but he would never wake up. Instead, he would be gruesomely murdered in his sleep. 32-year-old Lizzie Borden, would discover her father's lifeless body just 15 minutes later. Upstairs, the body of her 64-year-old stepmother, Abby Gray, would be found in the guest bedroom laying on the floor in a pool of blood. Their murders and the subsequent trial of Lizzie Borden would cause one of the largest debates in true crime history over her guilt or innocence, but what is indisputable are the energies that remain in the home to this day.

In January of 2006, 32-year-old mother of two Tracy Cusick was found dead in her Illinois home, submerged face-down in her bathroom toilet. Her death was initially ruled a tragic accidental drowning—a nearly impossible medical anomaly. But as her grieving family pushed for answers, suspicious injuries, alleged domestic abuse, and a groundbreaking forensic investigation pointed to something far more sinister. At the end of the day, Tracy deserves justice.

* editor note * I did say 2007 instead of 2006, during recording and my mic settings were somehow adjusted, so this audio sounds a little different than usual... my appologies twisted family!

There are certain names that are well known because of vacation tragedies—Madeline McCain, Amy Lynn Bradley and Natalee Holloway. Their stories have been told around the world, and rightfully so. They matter. Their families deserve answers, their stories deserve to be remembered, and for those who remain missing, they deserve to still be searched for.  But for every case that becomes a household name, there are others with truly twisted circumstances that receive only a fraction of the attention.  Max DeVries is one of these cases. It’s been 22 years since the 14 year old disappeared while on vacation with his family in Aruba and his family deserves to know what happened to him.

When we left in Part 1, we had come full circle from the events of November 12th and 13th 2022 by Kaylee, Maddie, Xana, and Ethan leading up to the 911 call bringing police to the home at 1122 King Road. Fellow students on campus and in their immediate neighbourhood grieved the loss of their classmates and friends at the hands of an unknown monster.
This week we dig into the investigation, Bryan Kohlbergers arrest and where the case sits today.
