Former President Donald Trump brushed off the House Jan. 6 committee’s referral to the Department of Justice that he face criminal charges for his actions leading up to the 2021 Capitol riot. A jury in Los Angeles found disgraced Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein guilty of rape on Monday after 10 days of deliberation. California’s first-in-the-nation Reparations Task Force has six months until it must submit its final report to the lawmakers who created it, but in numbers floated last week the panel suggested that the state pay some descendants of enslaved people nearly $500,000 each based on what it defines as three harms caused by slavery. The task force—comprised of elected officials, civil rights activists, attorneys, and academics—is also evaluating what it identifies as two further harms, and may assess further damages it says are due to certain descendants based on those calculations as well. As climate change and inefficient water management has left lakes and reservoirs drying up all over the Middle East and beyond, the Israeli government have created desalination plants that convert salt water into fresh drinkable water. Their plan was to pump water from the nearby Mediterranean sea, take the salt out of it and send it traveling throughout the country to the lake when needed. This would ensure an abundant water supply for its agriculture and people.
