President Donald Trump said he plans to speak by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the morning of May 19, followed by calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO allies, to broker a cease-fire in the Russia–Ukraine war. Trump’s remarks come on the heels of the first direct peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv since 2022, which were held in Istanbul on May 16 but which failed to produce a cease-fire.

Former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer on Friday, with the cancer cells having spread to the bone. In a post on social media platform X on Monday morning, Biden posted a photo of himself and his wife, Jill Biden, and wrote: “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
