At the time of this episode, I am in the middle of my second break from the trumpet since my injury...this time, it is twice as long as when I first took time off the horn.

Since starting this break, one principle has helped me keep my head above water, and that is the practice of touching my dreams.

Dr. Erika Bright has done her homework...literally.

I got in contact with her through my aunt, who told me that accomplished oboist Dr. Bright had compiled a large bibliography on musician injury, and that I definitely should have her on the show.

And I am so glad she did!

Listen as Dr. Erika Bright shares with me her extended experiences with tendinitis, surgeries, and other experiences that led her down the path of injury as an oboist, and how that changed the course of her career.

One of the things I am most passionate about in life is developing a mindset that helps me become who I want to become.

In this episode I share a well-loved principle that has been spoken of by MANY people - the 1% mindset.

I share how that has helped me to focus on the details of my progression, while at the same time trusting the process (wink wink) of my overall growth.

The greatest benefit to this mindset is that when we apply it, we can live in peace knowing that we are putting in the work, while not feeling we have to burn the candle at both ends, or completely throw the candle in the fire (aka burnout) in order to succeed at our dreams.

You know...sometimes I am amazed with the kind of people I get to talk to on this show.

Today's episode is no different!

In this episode, the one and only JEFF COFFIN shares with us his story of injuring his neck on a cruise ship, and how when he got home, he reached out to someone who he thought could help him get through that trial.

That someone turned out to be Michael Brecker.

He goes in depth about how Michael's mentorship influenced the rest of his career, including how he teaches his students and how he has been able to help out other musicians, not even just saxophonists!

His advice for anyone going through it: Listen to your body, and ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF!

This one was personal for me.

In August of 2022, I suffered my injury, which would alter the course of my life forever. 

A few months later, in December, the Harris Fine Arts Center, the home of the arts on Brigham Young University campus for almost 60 years was closed for good, soon to be torn down to make way for a new Arts building. 

In this episode I share how observing this demolition of a campus icon and the construction of the new building has taught me about my own process of growth in my personal life and musical growth as well as my injury recovery. 

To everyone who listens to this, you can't *healthily* rush the process of growth, in any facet of your life. All you can do is put in the daily honest effort, and trust that that is enough, that you are enough...

...to achieve your dreams.

In July of 2020, audiologist and freelancing trumpeter Ron D'Angelo was playing golf with his family when later that day he felt something was off on the left side of his face.

His first doctor thought he had had a stroke.

Luckily it wasn't a stroke, but it did end up being Bell's Palsy.

In this episode Ron shares with us the road to his recovery, and how this event actually helped him IMPROVE as a trumpet player. He shares with us the importance of the mentors, his being our friend Bobby Shew.

He tells us how talent sometimes slows down development

He shares his experience being a full time audiologist and trumpet player at the same time, and how that informed his experience with Bell's Palsy.

At the time this episode was recorded, it has been a year and a half since my injury...and a year and a half later my chops still have not fully healed.

In this time I have learned that there are a few things that have kept me going...

A few things that have made this the MOST impactful experience of my life thus far. 

1. Tenacity/Resiliency
2. Community 
3. Faith and Trust

Without these things, I do not know where I would be, or how I would be surviving this trial. 

This episode was one of the most meaningful to me to record, because in preparation, I saw how my Heavenly Father has equipped me with mental tools and other resources so I would be prepared with a solid foundation for when my injury occurred. 

And the best part about this, is that these principles apply to all musicians, not just those who are going through injury, and not only that...

It applies to LIFE.

Imagine getting your dream gig, at the beginning of your career, and then a week before the show, you get injured out of NOWHERE.

Such was the case with Miles Franklin Smith, who just after he turned 19, had an accident happen involving his flugelhorn while practicing.

From that time it would take him over two years to get back to where he felt like he was back on his musical feet....

Yet several years later he is playing better than ever and just recently started a MASTERS degree in music performance on trumpet at Northern Illinois University!
